Here's the situation:
I currently live in a townhouse in East Brunswick and is looking to move to a bigger place (4 bedroom single family home to be specific).
I really won't mind staying in East Brunswick but the single family home that satisfy our size requirement (4BR, 2.5bath) and affordable (under 550K) are either 30 or 40+ years old and/or has 10K+ property tax which are unattractive features to us. So I am wondering what town around central NJ I could possibly move to that could be more attractive.

I am still leaning towards staying in E.Brunswick because I have a few difficult constraints:
1) I work in South Jersey (Mount Laurel); it is already a long but bearable 50 minutes commute each way right now and I think the max i can add to the commute each way is another 10 minutes or so.
2) My wife works around Westfield (Garden State Parkway Exit 135) and she has to drop off/pick up our baby at my M-I-L in Old Bridge each day so it takes her about (40 to 45 minutes) each way.

So I am looking for a town with comparable school system as East Brunswick with houses and property tax that are slightly cheaper but has to be reasonably close to Old Bridge and suit our commute to work. (sorry for being such a pain) Both my wife and I agree that we both could endure an 1 hour commute to work.

We just started looking and we have been researching Monroe (not sure about the school system, looks like the town is undergoing a lot of development) and Marlboro (wife likes it but maybe a little too long a commute for me).

Any advices or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Burlington County - Northern - Chesterfield, Mansfield, Springfield, North Hanover, Lots of new homes being built in your price range...yards arent big..but the houses are. Good Schools too. Also check Bordentown.

You could try Jackson too, but then you will have to take 195 to 295 to Mt. Laurel. That won't be as bad as taking the turnpike.

I live in Northern Burlington County, so if you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Cripes almighty, you could probably move down here closer to Mt Laurel and your wife not work with all the childcare, gas money saved.

Billb is right though...going down towards Mt. Laurel you can get a nice house in a nice neighborhood for probably around 300K. I'm not sure what taxes are for sure but I would guess around 5k give or take. They have good schools down there too! If that is an option for your family I would consider it. The further south you go the cheaper it gets.

yeah, but they have to be able to commute easily to old bridge and westfield. IMHO burlington cnty's out of the question.

Ok, first thing is first.
The poster has a wife and a baby.
His wife works in Westfield, and his MIL is in Old Bridge...this is where his baby is getting dropped off.
If he is living in East Brunswick right now why would anyone want to make his wife's commute any longer than it already is???

One of your options is to stay in East Brunswick...it might be your best. Unless you can find a place that it closer to Old Bridge, then I would try to stay where you are now.

Read it again Tahiti - this was a suggestion of "wife quit the job" That area is cheaper.

And Northern Burlington wouldn't bad. Also could check out Allentown.

More I think about it, staying at East Brunswick might just be the best option...

not really...you suggested it first before bill said "wife quit job".

i don't even know why someone would advocate quitting a job anyway, we don't know the OP's situation.
