I think they majority of NJ residents are aware of the crime in Newark. They point of the post is to show the progress in development in the city.

I've been a resident of Newark my entire life and big things are happening. Crime isn't as bad as it was 10-20 years ago.

Crime Category 2016 (Through 12/25) 2015 (Through 12/25) % change
Aggravated Assault 1,126 1,020 10
Auto Theft 2,101 2,510 -16
Burglary 1,134 1,480 -23
Murder 93 103 -10
Nonfatal shooting victims 254 322 -21
Rape 100 102 -2
Robbery 1,384 1,788 -23
Theft 1,370 1,511 -9
Theft from Auto 1,757 1,854 -5
Total 9,065 10,368 -13

I've taken the stats from your link and it shows still a very high % of crime overall. Just because it dipped a little doesn't distract from the fact it is still high nationally.

Aggravated assault of 1126 for 2016, that's still about 100 assault per month.

You look at murder, 93 murder in 2016, off from 103 is not a big drop.

Rape did not drop much at all, 100 rapes vs 102 in 2015. That could easily been higher with the unreported cases.

Newark must be improving if corey booker was mayor.

His supporters claimed an improvement in the murder rate, when one March, a murder was claimed to not have been committed. A string of murders that was unbroken since the lates 1960s.

they wanted people to believe that one month out of decades or murders was a positive trend and attributed to CB and his policies. Odd that the newark's murder rate was hovering around 2 a week during CB's tenure.

the title of this thread, 'is newark improving' is another false flag for political advantage.

an honest lead would be, 'infusion of newark business continues'.

In no way does the littany of commerce in newark qualify as an improvement in newark's quality of life. 26 sq miles of territory most of it unsafe due to gangs and drugs. the car jacking capital of the country off and on.

Nj needs newark to improve, false marketing does not do newark or NJ any favors as it implies nothing else need be accomplished excpet of commercial influx.

I agree, I dislike these distortion threads to lure people in. The other problem I see is that Newark crime is a NJ problem. The neighboring towns are affected by criminals from Newark. So the title is misleading. They should stick with improving Newark and NJ business in the area. Right now Newark is still very much a train connection stop.

95% of the homicides and violent crimes are concentrated within a 10-20% area of the city.

The Ironbound section which has about 50-60k residents had zero homicides. The downtown area probably had in the low single digits. There is A LOT of progress happening in the Ironbound and in the downtown. The other areas will take a longer time. The city can't improve over night, it needs a more affluent population and a larger tax base. The police force has grown and that will help.

Developing land that was returning no tax revenue for the city is important for the city and the state. Tax revenue all around improves the city. It has to leverage it's positives...location, airport, transportation hub, etc. money is flowing in and love or hate Newark, it's a positive.

Booker is another Obama opportunist. Our property taxes were sky high under him and he decimated our police force. Two family homes wee paying $15k+ under Booker.

We can't compare Newark to a suburb. Let's compare it to Jersey City or another major city. I can tell you there are MANY Jersey City residents moving the the Ironbound and prefer it over JC by a lot.

Not sure anyone said crime in Newark is low, but they did say the 'overall crime rate' is the lowest it's been since 1967. That's got to count for something. While you're focusing on murders, plenty of the more common crimes are down by over 20%. That's impressive. I'm not sure I'd pass off a 10% reduction nonchalantly either. If the numbers were higher overall that 10% would seem more impressive.
