Don't forget Trenton, East Orange, and Irvington. More New Jersey "Detroits".

Whether you agree with it or not NYC is considered sometimes the best city in the world. Newark is definitely not considered the best city in the state. Even people who are hopeful about Newark's renaissance will not say Newark is the best city in the state. Although I am not saying Jersey City is the best city in the state I feel there are more parallels between JC and NYC than Newark and NYC. I also feel there are more parallels with Chicago and Paterson.
New York Harbor vs. Newark Bay
New York Rangers vs. New Jersey Devils
New York Penn Station vs. Newark Penn Station
JFK vs. Newark Airport
NYU, Columbia vs. Rutgers, NJIT

Jersey City does not have a port, a hockey team, a major rail hub, an international airport, or a major university. To the extent you want to make this stupid analogy, Newark would absolutely be the right city.

I think Camden is the East St. Louis of New Jersey.

This thread is stupid. Cities share similarities with each other because that's just how cities are, but there is no point in saying "Blank is the blank of blank." This is an unfair comparison to make for any city. For example, some of you say that certain cities are the "Detroit" of New Jersey. But couldn't you just as easily say the "St. Louis" of New Jersey, the "Oakland" of New Jersey, the "Cleveland" of New Jersey, the "Memphis" of New Jersey, etc for your comparison? Because what you really just mean when you sat that are that they are dangerous and ghetto, and we have tons of cities in this country that fit that bill. And nothing in New Jersey can rightfully be compared to New York City. Not Newark, not Jersey City, NOTHING. Hell, the entire STATE of New Jersey only has about half a million more people living in it than in New York City.

Nothing in New Jersey resembles Chicago, as per the original question. Chicago is also too large to compare to any New Jersey city. You can fit 10 Newarks into Chicago. Anyone who tries to make the comparison is really stretching themselves and grabbing at straws. Detroit can be resembled by many cities in the state when comparing their struggles, but to go beyond this generic comparison, I'll offer that at least Paterson, like Metro Detroit (but not as much the city itself) has a huge Arab population and acts as a cultural hub for people of Middle Eastern descent.

Some cities in the state are on the rise, while others continue to struggle. Let's not bash them or try to make them into something else. I hate the attitude that has taken place in Jersey City where many residents and business owners are trying to say that it's "the new Brooklyn" or something like that. It makes us look really pathetic and hints at an inferiority complex. We will always be in the shadow of NYC and Philly, but that doesn't mean we can't forge our own identity as opposed to calling Hudson County "The Sixth Borough" or something like that.

NJ politics is more closer to middle ages Fiefdom than modern democracy. Just look at our governor aka the King bullies other mayors. In the middle ages, wars are fought for control.

You have so many towns with their own rules and different tax rates and things. What other state has various sales taxes across towns? Each NJ town has their own corrupt mob bosses and run their own corrupt services and holding citizens hostage. NJ State DA doesn't have enough staff to go through each town and arrest so many corrupt officials. Newark's police commissioner job is a revolving door.

Then you have toll booths every where in NJ, what state has that?

NJ troopers are the equivalent of your middle age corrupt militia that pull people over to collect money. I specifically avoid going to certain towns and crossing roads in parts of NJ because the local Police is simply corrupt when the profile people and pull them over for ridiculous violations.

This state is setup like Panama canal where everything that goes through it are taxed heavily via tolls.

Ah grasshoppa, can you say reputation. A person or place generates a reputation which arrives before the person or influences a city someone might visit.

there is a reason many do not go to newark. Newark is the alcoholic old man who tells you he is going to quit drinking, eat healthy and get some exercise....but not today. the same refrain he sang between sips for the last 5 decades.

So if you know that old man you don't take him seriously. you know he needs an intervention but his aged mother tells you he is a fine boy and she doesn't want to hear anything negative about her son. Unlike her son, the old man, every taxpayer in the state supports newark whether they feel positive about its recovery in the late 21st century or thinks it s a hellhole that needs plowing.

Newark's recovery would mean a lot to nj taxpayers and everyone would once again be proud of the former crown city. Its never going to happen unless their is a political change on the city, country and state levels. Apparently the electorate has the tolerance of a saint.

Let's see, Newark and New York both begin with the same 1st three letters. What a co ink a dink!

Cute comparison.... but NO.

.......PATERSON ................................................. .............CHICAGO..........
  • HAS a MAJOR city nearby .........................................IS the Major city in the region.
  • HAS many Homes similar to Boston's Triple-Deckers ....IS not built as in the east. Its Bungalow Belt 1910-1940 is 1/3 of the city.
  • HAS its same borders longer in growth of the city.........IT continued city growth and neighborhoods till the early 60s.
  • HAS and does get flooding from the Passaic River........ IS not ever flooded by the Chicago River. It has a controlled flow.
  • HAS Wrigley Park as its worst blighted neighborhood .. ITS Wrigleyville is one of Chicago's most desirable neighborhoods.
  • HAS Lakeview area as majority Hispanic and minority.. ITS Lakeview in Chicago is High-End desirable Top neighborhood.
  • HAS no full alleyway system behind its housing........... IT DOES HAVE a full Alleyway system. Hiding its Power-Line Poles.
The Topography of PATERSON is FAR DIFFERENT THEN CHICAGO.
PATTERSON had hills and mountain. Plus its FALLS on the Passaic River. CHICAGO IS FLAT and CHICAGO HAS LAKE MICHIGAN.

Paterson is far more like a inland city then even Chicago. CHICAGO is more a COASTAL city though in the middle of the country in APPEARENCE. With Beaches and Harbors and Parks for Public use along its 26 miles of shoreline. Even right downtown.

These pictures show what many see .....

Landing at O'Hare in-..Taking off from Midway
coming from east... Airport heading back east.
