Default Insights on Moving/Renting in New Jersey

I'm relocating across the country to work in Manhattan. I have a daughter with a new baby who will be moving with me. I don't want to live in the city - and want to know what locations I should consider for safety and convenience when commuting into the city. I am not familiar with the area other than traveling in for work several times. I do not currently have a car but will probably get one. Without a car - how do people typically get to a train station - cab or other means?

I will be doing some traveling once I'm there as well. To rent a small house - what neighborhoods to consider? We have small dogs as well. I can afford $3,000/mo. if need be. I've also been told by a friend who moved there that you can avoid the realtor 'finder's fee' - which seems the case. And if my credit is challenged right now - any insights on that with renting there? I have a house that is being sold on a 'short sale' where I am moving from.

Also - what about the commute to Manhattan? Train vs. bus - how is the train from a safety perspective? If anyone has good links to help me online do some more research, that would be great.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

If you are looking to move in NJ, there are PLENTLY of areas that match your description. If you are looking to get to the train station without a car, most people take a cab that is few and far between as the cab rides can get expensive after a while; but then again it all depends how far you are from the train.

If schools are not of a concern at the time, I would recommend the following towns because of their train system and close proximety to NYC:

Metuchen
Edison (South)

If schools are necessary, I would recommend these towns:

East Brunswick (No Train, Bus Line Only)
Amazing School Systems and Beautiful Town

South Brunswick (Train Station In Nearby Towns)
Another Amazing School System

Edison (North)
Train Station In Town, Just Edison North Is A Bit More Expensive

As for finding a home with a realtor, in NJ there are no fees. They are free to work with as a tenant. The Landlord pays all the fees.

If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate.

All Real estate is Local, right?

A quick search in Basking Ridge & Bedminster for 3 bedrooms renting less than $3000 per month finds 10 properties. On exactly half, the landlord will pay the Real Estate Commission. On the other five, it's up to the tenant.

Actually, it's usually the tenant that pays the fee, not the landlord.
