I had to renovate my house at the shore after Sandy destroyed it....I never had to deal with this before and unfortunately didn't know anything about quality materials or contractors...it's been one disaster after another but I am really unhappy with the doors the contractors hung in the house. My original doors were solid wood from the early 1950s and could have been salvaged but a family member threw them out on me.

I chose the six panel doors and they came from a lumber yard, but they are so cheap and hollow and have many nicks and flaws in them....they remind me of a styrofoam cooler, and they were NOT inexpensive. Does anyone know of a reputable wood worker who deals with quality wood or mills wood? I really hate these doors and want them replaced along with the trim molding....I don't care if they are expensive, I am in a lot of debt because of the storm, so a little more debt at this point doesn't matter.

I have no suggestions but will watch this thread to see if anyone does. I have a 1925 Foursquare with most original doors but, my contractor also threw out a few that were being stored in the garage rafters (why? I have no clue what the prior owner was thinking). My front door needs replacement badly - it's just a solid wood, not original and leaks something dreadful. I haven't found anyone yet although, I have seen doors I like. Last quote I got for putting in not even a great door was like $4K because they need to take the entire frame apart and do rebuilding.

Like you, I want quality for both the product and install. Home Depot not for me.

you can buy six panel solid wood doors at home depot and lowes. I have purchased quite a few myself. they also have the 6 panel hollow doors too. a 32 inch hollow door is about $40.00 the solid pine wood is about $95. you can also order 6 panel solid oak wood doors but they are at least $200 unless you are going to stain it the pine should work fine if you are painting it

I second this.

They have them pre-hung or in slabs. The pine are heavy and will look nice with a stain.

I cheaped out when I replaced 12 doors in my house, and I wish today that I sprang for the solid doors. Then again, my budget was pretty thin.

The pre-hung doors of any stripe are easy for the do-it-yourself-er with a sawsall (to cut out the old frame), a hammer, level, and nails.

I know someone who went to a lumber yard and ordered doors. You might be able to do that at the building center.

Unless you're planning on declaring bankruptcy, it certainly does matter.
