I live right next to Watchung Plaza. My kids walk/ bike everywhere (school, supermarket, plaza shops, Upper Montlcair, downtown). Nice weather I walk/ bike to work (near Church St). I know people who live here with just a bike. I couldn't do it with 4 kids and work, but it's done.
Except for Jersey City and Hoboken, yes you need a car.
Not even all of Jersey City though. There are large parts of the city that, although walkable and compact, you need a car to go for most of your needs, like groceries, your job, etc.
The term "walkable" is so subjective that it's hardly worth having the conversation. Some people want everything within a couple blocks, while others might be willing to walk a half mile or more. In most of these "walkable" towns you probably could survive without a car, but you probably won't be happy without one in the long term.

That's a fair assessment.
Also, when people here comment "In NJ, you need a car," it seems to imply there are states in which you do not. Do Connecticut, Rhode Island, Delaware etc., have some vast public transit systems that obviate the need for a car? Doesn't one need in most places, unless living in or very close to a major city?

I agree, but I think when people make that comment it is usually directed at someone moving here from NYC that is not used to having a car.
