Default commute from highland park to downtown Newark, Penn Station

I am relocating to New Jersey and my apartment is in Highland Park and I will be working downtown Newark near Penn Station. What are your suggestions for commuting. I have no idea what station is close to me and from what I have read, parking at stations have a long waiting list. I do have a car, any suggestions?

Where exactly is your apartment in Highland park? Many areas of town are within walking distance to the New Brunswick Train Station. From there - Newark is only a 35min train ride. The Edison train station is also nearby but the waiting list for parking is like 10years or something crazy like that.

Your other options would be to drive to the MetroPark station (traffic would be a huge pain) or have someone drop you off and pick you up from either New Brunswick or Edison.

Good Luck

LadyP1, I used to live in Highland Park, at 5th and Raritan Aves. The walk to New Brunswick's train station was about 20 minutes. If you live closer to the Albany Street Bridge your walk will be shorter. I actually enjoyed the walk most days.

NJ TRANSIT offers two bus routes that go down Raritan Ave to New Brunswick Station (the 810 and the 814), so that's an option too. I took them on rainy days and they got me from home to the station in 5 minutes. Check njtransit.com for schedules and fares.

I'd give driving to Newark a try too, though I'd bet it would be a royal pain!!!

Thanks to both of you. The apartment is on Crowells Road. I tried looking on NJT website but according to it, there is no station near there.

I checked the driving directions and there are at least 3 partial tolls that I would have to pay. Is there any way around the tolls as this can prove to be costly every day going back and forth.

Sure, there's a way around tolls - just take Route 1 all the up to Route 21 into Newark. That will take forever however with the traffic. I still think your best bet is NJ Transit.

The station in New Brunswick is located at the intersection of Albany St and Easton Ave. The station in Edison is located at the intersection of Plainfield Ave and Central Ave.

Thanks. I will go with the train. I guess I just need to figure out which one is closer once I get there.
