Hello All, my wife got a new job in Mahwah, NJ and I work in Port Washington in Long Island. We moved to from long island to Hoboken 4 months back so it's easier of a commute for her. For me it takes door to door 1.5 hrs(Path->LIRR) and for her it takes 1hr door to door by NJTransit. I may be looking for new job in NYC in a year and we have our first baby on the way in 6 months. After some thought we have narrowed it down to a 2 bed condo in Jersey city(07310 or 07302) or a single family house in Gleck Rock or Ridgewood area in north jersey. Taking into consideration I may get new job in NYC in a year and looking to stay for atleast 5 to 7 years in that house what do you guys think I should do. Looking for some suggestions to help me decide. Our budget is around 650K.
Where are you coming from? Port Washington, NY (Long Island)
Why are you moving? Easier commute for wife's new job and good schools for future children
Where will you be working ? If NYC, what part of NYC? Port Washington right now and NYC (downtown/midtown) in a year.
Will you buy or rent? Buy
What is your budget ? 650K
What kind of place are you looking for? Condo or Single family house
Will anyone (spouse, children, pets) be moving with you ? yes
Do you need/want good public schools? yes
Briefly describe the kind of neighborhood you'd like to live in
(examples: families with young children, young, mature, artsy, diverse, safe, close-knit, block parties, etc)
diverse, safe and charming downtown with good restaurants
List three things that are important to you in order of importance.(examples: nightlife, outdoor activities, rural/urban, safety, downtown area, charming, new construction, proximity to XYZ, family oriented, easy parking, short commute, etc)
Reasonable commute to NYC, new construction(<20 years old) or renovated, and charming.

Do you have kids yet? If not will your wife want to stay home with kids?
First one on the way . She prefers to continue working.
That is what my wife said. She lasted six weeks after she went back to work. That was 16 years ago. Good news when my youngest goes to college she is going back to work. So basically from 2000-2025 she is taking a break from work.
