You can find that in the Rutherford (its fairly a suburb) area. I've commuted from Rutherford to Mid-town in 25/30 minutes easy. Take a short drive South on Rt 17 and hop on rt 3 East into Manhattan. Its very possible for you to find something like that if you look. You would also be able to find something in that price range in Weehawken, NJ which is even closer to Manhattan. It would be a lot more of a convenience for you to find something near a light rail. BUT I will say that if your looking for SUBURBS ONLY then chances of it being a less than 30 min commute to the City is less likely.

And exactly at what time of day do you hop on 3 East and sail through the Lincoln Tunnel in 30 minutes from Rutherford? Because it's not at rush hour, that's for sure. By train you could, but <$1700 for at least 2 bedrooms would be tricky. I used to drive in years ago from further out in Bergen County, and it took half an hour just from the Turnpike to the toll booths at rush hour.

Also, if the OP is looking for cheap rent, how can they afford the tolls and cost of parking?

At what time of day, and, more importantly...in what decade?

I've gotten from West Orange to Midtown in a little over 20 minutes. On the morning of 1/2/2016, which was a Saturday. On a weekday commute, forget it. Here's the issue:

It takes longer than 30 minutes to cross the Hudson. You can be in North Bergen or Union City or Weehawken, right off the highway, and you still can't get across in 30 minutes. You'll be lucky to do it in an hour.

THIS DECADE.

to Mightyqueen801

anytime before 7 am and after 9 am. The OP didn't specify what her husband did or what time he would need get to work.

So yes, in this decade and new millennium its very plausible to make it from Rutherford to Mid-town in 30 min or less.

At least you get a nice view of the Manhattan skyline. For a long time. Is that construction or something else?

That is what's known as the Lincoln Tunnel Helix. That's what it looks like at rush hour.

Looks like a truck broken down in the outbound lane, a common occurrence. The people trying to get out of the city are enjoying the scent of exhaust. That's probably not actually rush hour (no buses), but you can see the inbound lanes are packed.

There is also he possibility of the midtown direct train line, not to mention it is much cheaper than paying the toll, gas and parking. Look up the midtown direct train (the dover line) line online. The closer you are to the city, the shorter the commute obviously. Depending on where you are on the line, the trip can take 35 to 70 minutes. If you go to Maplewood or an area like that, you should be ok. However, the rent you are looking to pay is not reasonable. If you want to get into Newark, Some of the Oranges the rent will be less, but you will be sacrificing other things on your list.
