for rt 80 time of reference....my husband leaves at 6:30 from the general mt olive vicinity (a little further west) and he has no problem (barring an accident, storm, etc)....and he travels about 20 miles further east of Parsippany. he leaves at 4 and same thing - Friday's can be tough though. I don't think Mt. Olive to Parsippany is a nightmare if you have some flexibility.
and Parsippany gritty? funniest thing I've read all day.
Parsippany is sort of a gritty area, and thus home prices are going to be lower in that town than in surrounding communities. You are going to struggle to find anything with three/four bedrooms in the 250/300 range....especially anything with any property.
As suggested above.,..go west.....even as far out as Pennsylvania to find property which meets your preferred criteria.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Get a good realtor, and start looking. Going to be a long, hard search.
In 2006, Parsippany-Troy Hills was recognized by Money magazine as the 17th-ranked of the Best Places to Live in the United States, the highest-ranked location in New Jersey. In 2008, it moved up to 13th position.[26] Parsippany returned to Money Magazine's "Best Places" list in 2012, in the 15th position. It returned to the list in 2014, where it ranked 16 with Money citing its "Arts and leisure"
This is Morris County we're talking about! The only remotely "gritty" areas are parts of Dover and parts of Morristown.
Sussex County would be a great place! Not too far of a travel back and forth to enjoy the quite! Sussex County is a huge retreat for people working in the city and for a good reason!

You definitely dont need to go anywhere near Pennsylvania as someone suggested.
Rockaway is a good suggestion. There are several other towns west of Parsippany near 80 that are a reasonable commute as well where you can find what you are looking for.
Not sure if the other spouse is planning on working or what the deal is. If both are going to be working eventually, you probably dont want to go too far out, especially with young kids. The highways going out there all get pretty bad traffic
Do not go to Pennsylvania. Nothing but a trail of tears on I-80 with that commute.
Parsippany seems to be somewhat affordable by Morris County standards, but you would have to go further west for more house and yard.
