Default Moving from Somerset County to North NJ Areas Closer to NYC

I am currently living in Somerset County and want to move to northern NJ very close to NYC. I have never lived on my own before except for college. I want to get a new job either in northern NJ or NYC. I will probably be able to make $80,000/yr with a new job in those areas. I was thinking about Hoboken because of the PATH train or maybe Weehawken. I have a car and would prefer to have an assigned parking space. Are there any other good cities to live in in northern NJ that would put me very close to New York City?

I am not looking to pay more than $1000/month for my share of the rent. I would not mind living with 1, 2 or 3 other people as long as we each had our own bedroom. I have not had much success in being able to convince friends to move in with me and do not know how to find other decent roommates that would not steal from me. How can I go about finally moving out of my parents' place and into a place in northern NJ either by myself or with good roommates?

before making any further decisions I'd get a job so you'd know exactly where you'll be commuting to and how much you'll be making instead of assuming a hypothetical $80,000/yr
