Statistically it is one of the most dangerous places. Yes, things happen. But most of the time "things happen" between people who live in the community and have "beef" for one reason or another (drugs, money, allegiances, whatever). As a rando walking down the street with no connections to anyone in the community, the odds of someone deciding to harass me for no real reason are pretty damn low. Yeah, it could happen, but it's really unlikely. Maybe 0.04% in Paterson, compared to 0.01% in a "nice" suburb. Honestly, I'm more fearful walking around Edgewater, where I'm at risk of being hit by a speeding car along River Road, than I am worried about encountering a slasher in downtown Paterson.

I grew up in Midland Park (school was 40 years ago, though) We only went to the city on school trips such as to see the U.N. or Museum of Natural History. My grandmother lived in MP all her life--94 years--and as far as I know, she never went to New York.

My secretarial school teacher dared me to interview for jobs in Manhattan. It was a whole new world. I'm about to retire 37 years later. But when I went for my job interview at the WTC, I had no idea the twin towers even existed. You could see them from town, but it was just part of that faraway skyline. (And it was probably a good thing I couldn't see into the future or I might have stayed in MP!)

When I got to the reception desk for the interview, I looked out the window and gasped, "Is that the Statue of Liberty?" The receptionist looked at me like i was a doofus, and she was right.

Anyway, I have a sister who avoids the city. She thinks it's dangerous and she won't eat at a NYC restaurant because she assumes they are all dirty. She won't go to Jersey City or Newark, either. We grew up going to Paterson so that she can deal with.

In that same vein, many years ago, I had a friend who lived in The Ironbound section of Newark, and his mother had surgery performed at Greenville Hospital in Jersey City. No, I have no idea why she chose to go there, but that is a topic for another day...

Anyway, my friend was given the task of driving one of his aunts from The Ironbound to Jersey City, in order to visit his Mom in the hospital. According to my friend, his aunt kept chanting...It's so far, Charley-boy!...over and over and over again for the entire duration of the...16 minute drive.

It turned out that his aunt had never been outside of Newark in all of her 50+ years, with the exception of a few visits to Seaside Heights. She had never before ventured from Newark to...far-away...Jersey City.

It is strange.

I visited a friend in Ventnor once, and we went for a drink in a nearby town. I got into a conversation with a guy and tried to explain where I lived, which at that time was NW Bergen County. He said he had been to North Jersey, but not around there. I asked where in North Jersey, and he replied, "Forked River".

I almost fell off my barstool. Forked River is exit 77, I believe.

"North" is a relative term, I guess.
Just be glad that he wasn't your relative...
