Can someone update me on the status of the walkway path in Bayonne, particularly in the vicinity of the Bayonne Golf Club? Some maps show the walkway going fully around the course and winding up at New Hook Road. Is that access point open? Does the golf course control that walkway? Google street view shows a closed fence at that point, but that might not be the current state. Also I understand there is a route through the golf course, but they haven't updated their twitter feed since Tuesday, when they indicated it was closed due to icing.
I suppose its a bit of a long shot that anyone with this knowledge is out there in the audience, but if you are, please reply!

I know which one you're talking about, but I don't know the status of it. The last I remember, that trail ended at the waterfront and had a dead end. I don't recall if it continued out the other end to Hook Road.

I've never dared to venture beyond the heliport. There are signs up barring access beyond that point. I'm pretty sure the whole place is under video surveillance. I don't know of any public entrance at New Hook Rd.

One time I wasn't paying attention to the signs, made a right at the entrance, and went up a little hill following what I thought was a public trail. There were no gates blocking this path. Only when the trail ended abruptly onto the golf course itself did I realize that I ended up in an unauthorized area.

Thanks for the replies. I ended up attempting to enter from the south to no avail. The fence at New Hook Road is still locked, without even a sign of any kind. Then I tried the gatehouse, which I assumed to be the one they normally allow you through. But the big swing gates were locked closed, and again there wasn't a single sign of any kind. Finally a helpful lad popped out of the gatehouse and told me the entry to the walkway was way up by the TJ Maxx shopping center. Well it was a lot of walking through the industrial swamps that day! So there *is* a gate by the shopping center (I had assumed the walkway continued seamlessly at that point) . This is the one they close on bad days and after dark. The walkway that *is* available goes for maybe a mile, and is spectacular. But alas you get to a fence, with all kinds of nasty signs. The way beyond beckons luringly.

I read on some walkers group website that they had a large group walk recently, and actually proceeded past the Private Property signs, were confronted by security-types in carts, and then had a discussion of the issue with the officials, who eventually allowed the group to proceed on the walkway. I wonder which path they took -- did they go inland by the clubhouse and allowed to exit at the gatehouse, or did they take the long route around the course, and wind up at New Hook Road and that locked fence?

Oh I did see that path you took, Comet, to the right, and was going to check it out, but then noticed the No Tresspassing sign. Seems you're required to stay on the walkway. Wouldn't be such a bad requirement, if they only opened the entire walkway. Maybe the Golf Club will adopt a Good Neighbor policy someday, and open the rest of it. Maybe officials in Bayonne or Hudson County could make that an attractive choice for the club to make. It's a wonderful resource that should be enjoyed, not fenced off.
