We have a veterinary office in another part of New Jersey that's very diverse. And it illustrates to me very plainly why diversity is a terrible idea, as far as language is concerned. In Vet School, they don't teach you 30 different languages because you're there to learn how to treat sick and injured animals.

When someone walks into the office and speaks almost no English (in this area, there are literally a dozen different nationalities), we have NO WAY to explain complicated diagnostic results except in English (How do you say "Saddle Thrombosis" in Albanian?). Then we have clients who are staring at us, nodding, and we have no way of knowing whether they understood the instructions from the Dr. or not.

That isn't the goal of diversity, but it SURE IS one result. Many of these pets can't get the treatments they need because their owners don't understand English, and DEFINITELY don't understand medical terminology in English.

The "diverse" solution is to have a veterinarian in each town speaking a different language, so that all the cultures are represented in this particular field. Sounds great right? Until you realize that getting into Vet school is many times harder than human medical school. Out of all the potential veterinarians who could go on to vet school, funding is provided for exactly three per year. So it's going to take a while to fill all those language slots.

Tell me again why diversity is important? I've found it to be nothing but a barrier. It's time to get everyone speaking Esperanto.

Uh, maybe it's because when we speak of "diversity" here we mean diversity in culture and ethnicity, which does not necessarily mean loss of communication?

And yes, you should have at least a spanish speaker in your staff or learn spanish yourself. My brother's a doctor and he now has learned spanish through "on the job training" once he found out many of the patients only speak spanish

The notion that folks remain in a poor, crime-ridden areas simply b/c they want to is naive and disrespectful.

But to get back to the original question, one issue is balancing diversity with factors like affordability and low crime. There are some reasonably-priced homes in Westfield, and there is apparently no street crime, so conceivably, one would not be confined to the house at night when one might want to take a walk with the dogs (as I am able to do now in NYC).

Last week there was an immigration overpopulation conference in Washington , DC , filled to capacity by many of America's finest minds and leaders. A brilliant college professor by the name of Victor Hansen Davis talked about his latest book, "Mexifornia," explaining how immigration - both legal and illegal was destroying the entire state of California. He said it would march across th e country until it destroyed all vestiges of The American Dream.



Moments later, former Colorado Governor Richard D. Lamm stood up and gave a stunning speech on how to destroy America

The audience sat spellbound as he described eight methods for the destruction of the United States . He said, "If you believe that America is too smug, too self-satisfied, too rich, then let's destroy America It is not that hard to do. No nation in history has survived the ravages of time. Arnold Toynbee observed that all great civilizations rise and fall and that 'An autopsy of history would show that all great nations commit suicide.'"

"Here is how they do it," Lamm said:



"First, to destroy America , turn America into a bilingual or multi-lingual and bicultural country. History shows that no nation can survive the tension, conflict, and antagonism of two or more competing languages and cultures. It is a blessing for an individual to be bilingual; however, it is a curse for a society to be bilingual. The historical scholar, Seymour Lipset, put it this way: 'The histories of bilingual and bicultural societies that do not assimilate are histories of turmoil, tension, and tragedy.' I would invest in ethnic identity, and I would establish the cult of 'Victimology.' I would get all minorities to think that their lack of success was the fault of the majority. I would start a grievance industry blaming all minority failure on the majority placation."



"My sixth plan for America's downfall would include dual citizenship, and promote divided loyalties. I would celebrate diversity over unity. I would stress differences rather than similarities. Every American in that room knew that everything Lamm enumerated was proceeding methodically, quietly, darkly, yet pervasively across the United States today. Discussion is being suppressed. Over 100 languages are ripping the foundation of our educational system and national cohesiveness. Even barbaric cultures that practice female genital mutilation are growing as we celebrate 'diversity.' American jobs are vanishing into the Third World as corporations create a Third World in America Take note of California and other states. To date, te n million illegal aliens and growing fast. Using your logic, you should be able to pay your own way out of your middle class town, just as poor people should be able to pay their way out of a place like Newark. But, in fact, it would be naive and disrespectful of me to suggest that you do this b/c presumably -- esp. given your dim view of diversity -- you would move to a town like Westfield if you could. But you can't, for the very economic reasons folks find difficult to transcend in poor communities like Newark.

Victor Hansen Davis is a conservative idiot (not because of his latest book but because of that joke book of his in 2001 about military "history"). He's completely clueless, and looks it. Haven't we had enough years of conservatives who have destroyed our economy, killed the dollar, exported our jobs, and entangled us in another unwinnable war (and i don't just mean the war in iraq)?

No, this was not a rant but a speech given by Gov Dick Lamm of Colorado. If you don't like what he portrays, stick around. The country will change like he says.

Have no idea about westfield people, but cranford people are more small-town oriented and down to earth (just compare the crowded, mall-like westfield downtown versus the growing but still very small-town feel of the cranford downtown). MUCH better parking too, with the new parking garage at Cranford Crossings
