I can't argue with your particular situation.... My family has a house in Staten Island in that range and pays $4k. And that was a recent increase; for years it was even lower.

Several friends of mine here in NJ (especially in Bergen County), have complained of such high rates. It really depends on your exact town and lot size.

A know someone who was paying $2200 a year in taxes and the house just sold for a little over 900k in Brooklyn.

Tell me what house is worth 900k in NJ with taxes at $2200???

But aren't you comparing apples and oranges? Wouldn't a better comparison be made between NJ and Westchester? Or NJ and Long Island? And by that measure, why would anyone pay Westchester taxes over NYC property taxes?

If you want to compare property taxes of NYC, you can really only compare it to other major cities, cities with financial centers and major business contributions, like Chicago or San Francisco.
