Commuting to Newark
Hi everyone. Things have changed with my Husband's company. They have now decided to move their HQ to Newark, Broad Street to be exact. So, our house hunting has moved from what was Monmouth Co., northward to Somerset and Eastern Hunterdon co. My first question, Does anyone know the area of Broad St. in Newark? How safe is this area? I have read the horror stories about how crime ridden Newark is and I am a little nervous to say the least!
Also, we have been looking online at houses in Bridgewater and some in Raritan Township. Does anyone have a clue how long that commute would be from either of those areas to Newark? I know that Hunterdon co. is pretty far out, but it looks like a great fit for us, as long as the commute does not kill my husband. Also, he will be driving. Thanks for any and all information.

The downtown area of Newark has changed dramatically and is very safe during the day. i don't know that I'd walk around there at 2:00 am, but the PAC Center, and especially the new Prudential Arena has given the area high visibility and an increased police presence. He shouldn't have any issues working there.

Thanks so much for the quick response! That is reassuring. I know nothing about Newark so any information is very helpful.

If you have kids you don't want to live in Newark. Areas of Newark have changed but Newark is definitely not Manhattan. If he's working in Newark, consider something in Essex Co. A quick drive on 280 east will drop you right in Newark. West Essex is the nicest, but a cape cod will cost you $500,000. The Caldwells are really nice. West Orange and Montclair are very nice too as long as your OK with diversity.

as long as he doesn't stray too far or work odd hours he shouldn't have problems there, you can visit New Jersey Transit - Home and you can search for what towns have train service to Newark Penn Sta.

Thanks all. He will be driving. He does not want to take the train/bus. He is a glutton for punishment. We have no intentions of living in Newark. We are looking for new construction(we have a son with severe allergies/asthma.) Also, I just like the idea of western Somerset Co. or Eastern Hunterdon Co. So, any ideas, about commute times driving from say, Bridgewater to Broad St. in Newark? Thanks again, for the pointers!

Oh please. Broad Street in Newark during business hours is fine. I was a student at Rutgers Newark. I took the subway to school. Never had a problem. If anything, the biggest complaint in Newark is that the police force only works to protect the Caucasian people working downtown, at the expense of the mostly minority residents.
