Visiting Texas Again...
We visited a year ago, liked it, but, didn't have much time to spend on each town.
So were going back to look. Husband will need to find a job in security or something, he's retired police.
I've heard people are friendly, were outgoing...we have 5 children, so were involved in their schools, church etc.
How warm are people/neighbors?

Dont want to sound too judgmental but I have many relatives there and they all say that the state and local governments along with ALL law enforcement/ criminal justice agencies are as corrupt as they come. I know Jersey has its problems too, but i hear thats how they make their money esp, in the smaller districts in by railroading so many people especially tourists and newcomers from the coasts, with trumped up charges. I hear the Texas motto is, "come on vacation, leave on probation!" Anything to keep the coffers filled.

These generalizations are so silly. TX is a huge state with huge cities, small towns and everything in between. It is also very regional. If you want to have a legit discussion- at least be specific in regard to the area you are interested in. LOL.

i grew up in atlantic city until i went into the military. since then, i've lived in alabama, florida, oklahoma, texas and louisiana. i love new jersey, at least south jersey by the shore. the food is way better than any food down south--nearly all chains--except louisiana. the weather and beaches are better and of course the people have a better sense of humor in new jersey. the down side is that new jersey has corrupt politicians and is too expensive.
as for texas, i hate the place. i had a good paying internship with an oil company in dallas over the summer. i left because it sucked so bad. the heat was terrible, traffic insane and no beach or good pizza. sure it's affordable, but it's affordable for a reason-lots of sprawl and low quality of life. desirable areas are expensive because people want to live there--supply and demand.
i understand why people leave new jersey, but i'll never understand why you would move to texas. it is by far the worst place i lived. in my opinion, you should stay in new jersey because despite the many problems, it still is way better than texas.

NJ Tornados
Quote:

I've heard of tornados but have never seen one. We had some bad hurricanes in NJ also.

I
just read the post, in NJ we had a tornado go down our street, it knock my neighbors huge tree down on his house. We also had one in Cherry Hill or Marlton area a few yeas back, I remember hearing on the news that cars were damaged in the shoprite parking lot.
We love living at the jersey shore, we just can't afford it anymore!
Thanks for the post

I had a friend move to Dallas. He emailed me pics of his 210K PALACE! 2800 SF, granite kitchen...
IF I can ever afford a house working 2 jobs it will be 50 miles out from the city and 1200 SF. Probably a permarenter.
Employed uber alles and that I am... twice.

Hmm...was the $400K house in Texas bigger than the $550K house in NJ? Also, did you get a homestead exemption? If you were paying $12K on a $400K house, probably not.
Then there's the lack of an income tax here...trust me, I don't know any Jersey transplants here who have any complaints about taxes after all's said and done.
Concerning tornadoes, from north of Austin on up it's Tornado Alley. Dallas proper hasn't really had a big one, but it could happen. They are less common and less intense closer to the coast, toward Houston (where I live).
Now all this said....yes, if the rest of the NJ population leaves and goes to the same place, then don't be surprised when you find traffic. No matter if it's Texas or North Carolina or wherever. You are not the only one coming here from somewhere else.
Finally, if the "drawl" gets on your nerves that much, either A) leave and go back to Jersey or B) move to the inner city. I hear a "drawl" in inner Houston about as often as I hear people speaking Vietnamese. Personally I don't see why it's so much of a problem for anyone. I wouldn't move to NJ expecting to hear much besides Jersey accents.
