Default Relocating from West Coast

My husband is taking a job in Manhattan and we would like some information on the best places to live outside NYC. We are looking for a nice family neighborhood that is still close enough for a reasonable commute into the city. (We were thinking one hour or so, please let us know what commute times are like from specific areas if you know.) We plan on renting a three bedroom apartment or house until we find the best location so any information you have on this would be helpful as well. We are currently living on the West coast and are not at all familiar with the East coast so any additional information you feel is relevant would be greatly appreciated.

SkizzThere are so many Threads in here asking about where to move outside on NYC with a commute time of less than 1 hr. My recommendation would be, if your driving yourselves into NYC and you only want to sit in traffic for an hour, look in areas within half that time frame without traffic.... 30 mins out from NYC. If you're going to be planning on taking public transportation that will increase the distance out and open up so many other possibilities..the further west or Northwest you go, the more suburban it will become.
