West Orange has two reasonably new gated communities (and one very old one), but they're not exactly common in Northern New Jersey. They're townhouses (or very close; I seem to recall some are not attached but share a small deck, kinda weird). The Pointe at Crystal Lake and the Villas at Eagle Ridge. Both have bus transportation. Taxes and fees will knock your socks off (one reason I'm not there), but on the good side they're well under the OPs budget.

Thanks for the update but not looking for townhouse.

I've only seen gated entries in NJ for 55+ communities. Interesting to know there are some.
