FABULOUSLY-WRITTEN post, Kelsie!!! My favorite part involved the treatment by the vets, about whom I am VERY, VERY particular.

Awww, thank you CC that was very nice of you to say. I still have our Vet's cell # in NC & if I have a ques. call him at any time. He will send her medicine to us. We still bring our girl there & we have our Dr.'s visits scheduled for next year. Pitt County Animal Shelter is fabulous & the people there care about the animals first. We got our new little girl there. Since moving back to So., NJ, we haven't boarded her. We were spoiled with the Vet & Animal Resort in Chocowinity, NC. When we visit she goes there to see her friends (I cook for the resort & of course the Vets)!

The people in NC care about their mother's & their animals before anything & not necessarily in that order!

Their slogan is we "work to live & not live to work"!

As I said there are pros and cons to both states & I love both NJ & NC! Just glad to be home near the kids now!

Retriever Yes, unfortunately you read that right!

Seriously, who is still hung up on this stuff and why? I think some people out there are stuck in the Civil War. People move everywhere. This is just how life is, especially nowadays when traveling and moving is so easy. It's not just NC or the South that sees an influx of people from other areas...

IMO Health care is superior to NJ. We never had a problem getting a prompt Dr.'s Appointment & if you had to go to a Specialist, the appt. is made before you even leave that Dr.'s office. There are signs in the offices we went to that said, "if you wait longer than 15 mins., please come up to the desk". In 13 yrs. we never waited longer.
I can't comment on wait times because I have never lived in NC, but IMHO we have a big advantage for healthcare here. We have access to some of the best hospitals, doctors, surgeons, and specialists in the world right across the river in NYC, and to an extent across the other river in Philly, too. Many members of my family have taken advantage of this. Some doctors even have offices in both the city and NJ or work with multiple hospitals. While some from elsewhere around the country have to travel to a place like Sloan, for example, if they can even come, and stay in hotels or rent around here for weeks or months at a time, we in much of NJ get to just commute back and forth for the day. It's easy and at our fingertips. I am fortunate to live where we live because many people I know and in my family have needed to get to some of the best hospitals out there, for very specific things, with amazing doctors, and luckily for us they are not far away. NJ also has its share of great hospitals and doctors - NC does too, I'm sure, but other than wait times I don't know how accurate this statement is.

For the exception of homes and taxes, everything else in comparable to NJ. NC is not inexpensive to live in. Food is just as expensive & there is tax on clothes. When you move in there is a $200 one time fee per vehicle for NC road tax. There are 218 restaurants (most of them FF) in a 5 mi. radius. There is a lot of crime & over 50% of people carry guns. My friend & I used to walk our dogs, I had my Taser, she had her gun.
Did you carry a gun/taser on walks because you felt unsafe? Or because it was just something that people did and you wanted to join in on the fun? That's very odd to me but perhaps it's a cultural thing.

That is something I will personally never understand. I have family members here in NJ who like guns and hunting, but personally I don't see the point in walking around with your gun casually in public, especially in an area with low crime and general safety. You hear stories of people in states like Texas walking into restaurants with their guns - why? Just because they can? Open carry or whatever it's called. To me that is not a reason but that's just me. I'm glad we don't have the same type of "gun culture" here in NJ as elsewhere.

And yes, that reading by third grade thing shocked me. People can say all they want about NJ but our education system is great. It's why a lot of people suffer through the taxes and stay here to raise their kids. It's truly a great place to raise a family. Unless people genuinely cannot afford to live anywhere remotely good in NJ, I always question why the hell they leave the state with their young kids to head South. The quality of education will just not be the same. I can totally see why you'd leave after retirement or when your kids grow, but to consciously move out of NJ when you can still afford it even though it might be tough and sacrifices may have to be made just because the South is cheaper and you get more bang for your buck to me is a bad decision.

We have a gun culture, and thank God it's alive and well in pretty much any county not traversed by the Turnpike or Route 1. We're just deprived of our Second Amendment rights. PLENTY of people in NJ (myself included) would be carrying if they could. FWIW there are also plenty of people carrying in NJ (ie: criminals) right now, which is exactly why LAW ABIDING CITIZENS should be allowed to carry.

I don't really like to disagree with my NJ citizens but NJ does not have a gun culture, NC has a gun culture. Until you have lived in NC you have no idea of the amount of domestic and sometimes just an argument turns to gun violence in a state where you can carry.

I am a gun owner with a carry permit but never carry on my person. In my car, in my house , yes, just in case. But when you allow just about anybody to carry you wind up with too many wackos carrying guns.

Of course criminals carry in every state, you are never going to stop that. But when law abiding citizens with a carry permit forget the rules and start imbibing along with their buddies bad things are going to happen.

In NJ rowdy guys in a bar get into fist fights, in NC they get into gun fights.

Be careful for what you wish.

If I ever decided to move back to NJ my guns would stay in the house because I have less of a fear or being assaulted in NJ then I do in NC.

I am in favor of everybody being allowed to easily purchase a gun for in home protection but that's another topic.

This is why I'll never move. BTW, Sloan has a satellite office in Basking Ridge (where I go) and they are opening one in Middletown right on Red Hill Road. The doctors at these satellite offices go into NY at least once a week to consult with their colleagues there. I've had surgery at the NYC hospital. You can't put a price tag on top notch care, and something people don't realize until they are staring at a condition that can take your life.

Not sure what bars you hang out at, but I'd stop going to the ones with so many gun fights as you call them. Watch many Western movies?

Don't be so naive to think gun carrying drunks are not more dangerous than those not carrying. The same also applies to road rage incidents.

The problem of course, is that the statistics don't bear this out. If you look at the data, you'll see that there may very well be drunks carrying guns in NC and shooting people over arguments in bars or road rage incidents. What you'll also find is that these individuals, more often than not, were carrying illegally and/or were prohibited from possessing firearms to begin with (convicted felons, etc...), and did NOT posses a license or permit to carry a firearm. For the life of me I don't understand your motivation-you openly admit to possessing a license to carry yourself and that you carry a firearm, but yet you paint those who carry with a broad brush? Not to mention that your premise is simply wrong.

Wrong I don't carry but I do have a gun in my car as anti hijack insurance. I go to the range a lot because I like to target shoot that is not the same as being paranoid and afraid to go to a store or restaurant without protection. People down here carry in church (that's real paranoia)

The benefit of having a carry permit is that if you go to the gun store and see something you like there are no phone calls for background checks. Your carry permit already covers that.

Your correct about statistics because NC is gun friendly and try to hide the fact that a lot of gun shootings happen.
60+ years in NJ and never gave a thought to having a gun at home for protection. In NC I would not feel safe at home without one.
That's gun culture.

Guns are just like automobiles, the more of them out there the higher the chance of an accident. It's all about the numbers.
