Exclamation Shrewsbury, NJ

Hi there

I am looking for an honest opinion about Shrewsbury, NJ in Monmouth County. While I am aware that this is a small little town, I am very interested to know it's status in the Monmouth County area. For instance, Rumson is supposed to be a fantastic town but expensive and Red Bank is supposed to be amazing but has both good and bad sections. I am really unaware of anything about Shrewsbury and am considering moving there. Can someone please send me some information on this little town? Links to sites with reviews would also be greatly appreciated.

Rumson w/o the so-called cachet and further from the beach. Very pretty, right adjacent to Red Bank. I grew up in Rumson, had aunt & uncle in Shrewsbury so spent a good deal of time there. My dad and stepmother now live in a very attractive condo development (yes! truly!) in Shrewsbury, well wooded and populated by deer.

Here's a NYT article, albeit four years old. The general lifestyle gist of it still holds; I don't know about market conditions.

Shrewsbury is a very nice, family friendly area. Good schools, middle to upper middle class environment. Lawyers, Doctors and Judges make up a good percentage of the demographic that buy there to give you an idea. Definitely a good area to buy in if you can.

I was comparing it to Rumson. Ten minutes to the ocean vs. one or two.

Shrewsbury, at the worst, is 6 miles from Sea Bright Beach, the travel to the beach is irrelevant unless you are living in the most Eastern section of Rumson.

I live in the two River area, and if you were to compare the towns, in my opinion, in order of desirability, it is Rumson, Little Silver or Fair Haven (it depends on if you are a more New Yorky "chic" yuppie, then its Fair Haven, if you are a more restrained, "down to Earth" type person, its Little Silver - but they are both wonderful communities), then Shrewsbury, Oceanport, and lastly Red Bank.

I guess it depends on what you are looking for. Are you most concerned with schools, or property value, or resale, etc. The thing with Shrewsbury is that there is not so much a "town center" unless you count Rt. 35. Fair Haven has a great town center, Little Silver's is smaller and less stores but still great, and Rumson's is the smalles with less amenities but still somewhat walkable. In Little Silver or Fair Haven, theoretically you can walk to the schools, library, parks, stores, dry cleaner, etc and be without a car if you desire. Shrwesbury, not so much.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong - but there are two very distinct "Shrewsbury"s.

Shrewsbury boro - the bigger part of Shrewsbury - as other posters have said - very nice.

Shrewsbury township - from what I believe is a very small cluster of apartment buidings with one main entrance that says "Shrewsbury Township". It kind of butts up against the railroad tracks going through Tinton Falls. Very different from the rest of Shrewsbury.

I think there's more to the story about the two distinctions but I don't know, for certain, what they are.

I don't know specific things, but I have lived near and been to Shrewsbury my whole life.

All I can input is that it's generally reguarded as a very nice place to live. I will repost, but most of the areas I've been to seem really nice. It's close to Rumson, Red Bank, Little Silver, and Tinton Falls. (As the other person said I guess there are two sections. I've never paid attention to this, I suppose since I don't live there).

Red Bank is awesome. There are two sides of RB, but I think a lot of towns as long as it's big enough and not completely rich have two sides. But the main area in Red Bank is one of my favorite places to be. Restaurants, Shops, Nightlife, Transportation...RB has a lot of good things, all easily within walking distances too. RB also holds a lot of town activities in the summer and wintertime. During winter they offer free horse and buggy rides for shopers, for instance. Shrewsbury is really close to it, and also has some nice areas to shop and walk around. Particulary, the Grove. You can google it. Grove stores can be a little expensive, but it's still great to shop, walk around, and eat there. Little Silver is a really small town near it, but also a nice town. My boyfriend lived in Little Silver all his life.

I live right outside Red Bank. As far as the bad section, it's isolated. You never see the bad mix with the good areas. There are some beautiful old homes on great blocks in Red Bank. I think the ''bad section" overshadows the good areas. As far as Shrewsbury is concerned, it can be ''snooty''- just go to the Grove and you'll know what I mean. But, aside from that, it still lacks a 'town feel' that you get in Red Bank.
