Another great one is how my fiancee (North Jersey girl) can never figure out how to pronounce "Gloucester" (her sister goes to Rowan), it always comes out "Glow-chester."

Some of the Indian names up north are tough and I've heard any number of pronounciations:

Allamuchy - Al-a-much-ey, Al-a-muck-ey?

Wanaque - Wanna-que, Wa-nock-key
?
I think these 2 places are discussed earlier in the thread.

Wanaque is definintely Wanna-que.

I hear Allamuchy prounounced 2 ways:

Alla-mooch-eee
Alla-much-eee

I say the first one and have never been corrected.

With me being a Pittsburgher and having a Pittsburgh accent when I say Newark it sounds almost like I am saying "New York" really fast. I always wanted to know how it was pronounced. I never really knew our accent was that bad untill I was in Newark and New York and the locals couldn't understand what we were saying.

Ah!! Since my move here a few years ago, this one has stumped me too. The locals all say EVE-SHAM with no emphasis on either syllable. I know this isn't correct, but something that's become the norm because so many people say it. (Kind of like Pi-A-jit ave in Clifton!). I think it should be said EVE-Shum, but I have heard someone say EV-ah-shum.

My solution-- call the town hall and see what their recorded message says... YEP- they say EVE-shum!

It should be be pronounced "Car-knee" I should know as I now reside in Glasgow Scotland but was born Pa- sake and as you Know Car-knee is full of Scots.
