I always pronounced Newark as new-wark, until I come to this board,
acturally I always confused when I'm in train pass by newark, the conductor pronounce it like New York.

Also a question for Belleville, at first I pronounced Be-lly-ville, but nobody can undstand me until I spell it. How to prounce Belleville? Thanks.

BTW, I'm not an English native speaker.

it's bell-vill. both "belle" and "ville" are pronounced the french way, where the "e" is silent on both.

The funniest one to to hear people say wrong is Kearny.

I went to high school in North Arlington, so I know it's "Kar-nee"

but where I work now in Burlington County...if a client is from Kearny, everyone calls it "Kerr-nee". The first few times they did it, I am like where the heck is Kerr-nee?? And then they spelled it, and I am like ummm, that's Kearny people!

i can tell immediately if someone didn't grow up or lives in hudson/lower bergen (maybe some of essex) counties by the way they pronounce Secaucus.

the correct way: SEE-caw-cus
the wrong way: Suh-CAW-cus

i agree. the butchering of the pronunciation of kearny makes my stomach turn.

but when i think about it, kearny isn't really a well-known town outside of its immediate area. when i mention that town to friends from the city, or even upper bergen county or central jersey, more often than not they look at me with a blank expression.

is kearny really that anonymous? i guess i never thought so since i spent a lot of time there as a kid. still, i'm shocked how many people in jersey seem to exist in their little universe in which they know their town and the surrounding towns, they know the city, and they know the shore - but they don't know anything about towns or areas within jersey that are only 10-20 miles away. very odd.

kearny is pretty much an unknown in hudson county, maybe because of where it lies geographically. it and harrison are pretty much forgotten! i think the relocation of the county jail from Jersey City may have put it on the map so to speak a little more within the county itself.

i've always heard of kearny - my parents had friends there, my uncle lived there, and my dad ran the jail there when it opened. and i knew that one side of Ridge Rd was North Arlington (Bergen) and the other side was Kearny (Hudson), LOL. but otherwise, it's kind of "out of sight, out of mind".

harrison is totally "less" known, IMHO.

I think the opposite. I recognize Harrison because there's a busy little PATH station there. I know Kearny is there, but I never hear it mentioned by anyone.

I think the MOST forgotten municipality of Hudson County award goes to...

drumroll please...

The Borough of East Newark.
