You can't trust the automated voice on the NJ transit train nor the way workers pronounce places! I heard one call the "Towaco" stop in Montville "Ta- Wha-co". It's really "Ta- way-co".
It was him and the way people said "Passaic" that prompted me to create this thread!

Boomfield and Haledon
My husband swears locals drop the "L" on Bloomfield but he grew up in Nork near E.O. (east Arange)
Ha Le don - I live in Hawaii now and here it would be Hah le done.
But this girl from Haw thorne knows it's Hail den or North Hale din.
I've seen people trip over Mahwah. I did as a kid.
I love this post since I pronounce everything wrong in Hawaii with my jersey accent to boot.

I've lived in Essex County my entire life and over 25 years in Bloomfield and for the most part we keep the "L".

I've never heard anyone say it, but seeing it on maps, etc. I always assumed "All-a-mook-ee." I guess I had that one wrong.
toe-wah-co is the only pronunciation for Towaco I've heard.
Here's one: Closter (Bergen County). CLOH-ster or CLAW-ster?
Or... Avon-by-the-Sea... Is it Avon- BY-the-Sea or Avon-by- THE-Sea? Hehe jk.
