We also had to mount it right in the kitchen - and it had to be a certain kind.

I bought and sold in North Brunswick (2 years ago) and it was not mounted for either. It just had to be in the cabinet. It must be a township thing.

I just kept mine in my pantry closet. The inspector just wanted me to have one.
Don't forget that you also need a carbon Dioxcide alarm mounted near the bedrooms. Make sure all your fences are not leaning and are firmly mounted especially if you have a pool. There also must be a railing if your deck has steps. You may have bought the house with these things missing, but now its stricter.
Make sure you have permits for a shed.
My house was sold in NJ in 2006,Manalapan Township so those are some of the things they look for.

Yep, for N Bruns it was pretty easy. the extinguisher requirement has been a requirement since 2005 (i think). When you call the town for the appt they tell you how many lbs and what type of fire extinguisher you need to have.

In Scotch Plains, we needed to have it wall mounted, but it was in the breakfast nook area - so a bit out of the way. It was within the correct distance from the stove - and ours had to be between the stove and an exit.

I've been following this post as we have home inspection today. I ended up contacting someone from my town and was told that I need to call state of NJ Division of Fire Safety @ 609-633-6132
Hope this helps someone. I'll see what info I can find out today
