There are some cold hardy palms, but they're not the ones that you see at the beach. Cactus grows there.

I think it is cool when local municipalities put up palm trees for the season at beaches. Summer is SO short around here, so it is nice to feel like on your on vacation without having to spend all the money! Kinda. haha.

They can't live year round here outside. The beach bars in Atlantic City usually put them in for the summer. There is no beach with palm trees like in Florida, though.

Windmill palms have a cold hardiness down to 5 degrees. You can buy them cheaply online. I'm planning to get one and we'll see what happens.
