My husband and two children currently live in Scotch Plains and are thinking about moving to Basking Ridge. We want a larger house, bigger lot, less property taxes and schools that are ranked a bit higher. We currently enjoy our access to Westfield's shopping and restaurants and love the convenience Scotch Plains provides to other stores. Basking Ridge is gorgeous and we love the serenity and rural setting...but we're afraid it may be too rural. Can someone please tell me about Basking Ridge's stores (grocery, drugstore, Home Depot etc) and the restaurants? We saw the downtown area but it seems very small...

Rural? I guess by Northern NJ standards, but it's not like you can't just head down to US 202 in Bernardsville for stores. Not walkable like Westfield though.

Or down into the center of Warren, or out towards Berkeley Heights/New Providence.

Assuming you're not trying to get to those places at rush hour, there's pretty much whatever you want within a 10-15 minute drive. It's worth remembering most of the main roads are 35-45mph and move at that pace the majority of the time.

Uh, this is not how it works, If you want less taxes you simply move to an area or state that has poor school ratings.

The reason to move to Basking Ridge is to get away from shopping centers and enjoy some fresh air that you get with living on larger lots up in the Somerset hills.

15-30 min drive will get you all the stores and shopping you want.
