Hi, I'm currently renting an apartment in Rahway and commuting into NYC. I'm in the middle of looking for a townhouse that is within an hour of the city, but I'm finding my home of Union County cost-prohibitive. Now I am looking at Middlesex County (I'd rather not go farther north as I have family in Ocean County). Anyone have suggestions on developments? Right now I am focusing the search on Edison, as there appear to be a lot of townhome communities there. Also, I'd like to find a development where the townhouses are side-by-side instead of stacked, as I have a cardiac issue. Cost is the biggest factor -- I'd like to top out at $280,000 as I only have my own salary to rely on! And a fixer-upper is probably a bit over my head maintenance wise (I know my limitations!) so it would need to be newish (20 years or less). Open to Edison or other ideas. Thanks.

You can probably get a ground-level 2-bedroom condo in the Birch Run Drive area of Piscataway for that much. There are many condo/townhouse developments in that area - Canterbury, Maple Grove, Birch Glen, Maple Woods. Canterbury is the oldest, built around 1992-1994. Maple Woods is the newest, built last year (some units may even still be under construction).
