Does anyone know what the criteria is to be able to renew your driver's license online or by mail? The NJMVC website doesn't give any specifics about who is eligible. I was at the DMV yesterday to renew my license and the woman next to me said she did her's by mail. Is it aged based? I spent 2 hours at the DMV for my renewal.

Based on what? Just a random sample of people?

Mail-in Renewals: Skip the Trip

Many Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) customers are now eligible* to skip the trip to an agency and can conveniently renew their driver licenses or non-driver IDs through the mail.

Eligible customers will be mailed renewal materials along with instructions. Upon completion of the renewal process, the customer will be mailed a new, four-year photo document (using the photo and signature currently on file) within 10 business days after receipt of your payment. Customers are advised not to wait until the last day of their renewal month to renew by mail as they may not receive their new document prior to expiration.

When I was there last time, they said that EVERYONE has to do it in person now to get the "enhanced digital driver's license". They need to confirm all of your information again. The person that did it by mail probably did it a couple of years ago. This is why the lines are so long, too many people at once

I just got my renewal letter and I can renew by mail after having renewed in-person 4 years ago. I always thought it was every other renewal, just to keep the photo reasonably current.
