Oct 20, 2015 - MAPLEWOOD — Halloween should be celebrated at home, not at school. ... school's student body did not participate in last year's celebrations, ...
Yup, our politically correct society is getting way out of hand. At my daughter's preschool (not in Maplewood) they are not allowed to celebrate any holiday because it might make other children uncomfortable if it's something they don't celebrate. To take a it a step further, they can't even talk about their own birthday, or having a birthday party, because it might upset another child if they did not get invited to the party.
Talk about ridiculous...then people wonder why kids these days have so many issues. We try to pretend like we're a "diverse" society, but nobody is allowed to celebrate their own traditions publically, so really we're striving towards becoming a homogenous society. It's nuts.
Maplewood certainly has gone mad, but not every town in New Jersey is politically correct or controlled by stark, raving mad liberals.
The schools are decent in Maplewood. For a town with a good number of well to do people, Maplewood has residents that try to mitigate the effects of wealth and consumerism on their kids. I like that. It's important.
Yet I could never, and I mean never, live there. I just can't stand liberals and their complete lack of common sense. Halloween is fun. Kids deserve to have the same fun I had when I was a kid. If 21 children want to dress up as Iron Man, Spiderman and Isabella the First, I could care less if the 22nd kid feels offended because of fictional characters. I am sick and tired of people being offended. I trust my children's friends' parents to use common sense with the costume choices.
My kids are getting on the old side for Halloween, but every December my family enjoys the Westfield Christmas tree lighting. Does Maplewood already have a ban on Christmas? Is one coming?
And there would have been hell to pay if my wife was told she could not send in St. Patrick's Day treats on March 17th.
So maybe Maplewood has Ridgewood beat for anti-consumerism but Ridgewood would be my choice over Maplewood any day. I must say that I am quite happy here in Westfield, but that's for another post.

We are currently in the market in both Ridgewood, Westfield (and by extension Wyckoff etc in Bergen)...we have a 3yr old and 1yr old. Have seen several houses in both and feel the vibe is nice--could easily see ourselves ending up in one of the towns. Several people who live in Ridgewood for example describe Halloween in town as tons of fun for the kids. Why on earth would anyone want to screw with that is beyond me.
