Yes I'm going to have to say that areas such as Woodbridge, Edison Rahway etc. are not the same level as alot of the towns you will find in Monmouth County. It doesn't make one person better then another; it just means people have different standards for what they describe as "nice," "desirable," or even "acceptable." I would say that there are some areas that folks have described as "nice" on here whereby I have chosen to avoid the conversation b/c my feedback would be different and in fact providing my opinion in those situations would add nothing substantive except to insult peoples' lifestyles.

That was my point - 5k anywhere in NJ is going to be tough to find

I am sorry to say, there are towns in NJ with low taxes. I used to live in Monmouth Junction (Middlesex), and taxes were very cheap compared to surrounding towns. In Bergen Country, towns like Franklin Lakes, have very low taxes in respect to their home values. Sommerville (Somerset Country) has reasonable taxes as well.
For the record, I always thought NJ property taxes were high....
I moved to Illinois 3 years ago (forced job transfer). I regret it completely. Based on a 250K house in IL you pay 9K in property taxes and depending if you live in an incorprated or unincorprated area (yeah, this was a new one to me), it could cost you up to 3K more a year in other taxes.
Now, if I am paying 10K in taxes a year for a 500K valued home, the percentages are much lower.
When I retire, I want to retire from NJ, sell my million dollar home/shack, and move to FLA. If I am to sell a home here in IL, I won't be able to retire to FLA because my home would be worth a lot less.
Trust me, you have blinders on and speak without seeing the bigger picture.
I love NJ. You won't understand that one, unless you move to IL.

My house in Manville on a 50x100 lot is 4800 a year.
there are places in NJ that arent 10K a year, though I agree they are hard to find. And all that said, I am selling my house in Manville because my taxes went up and I decided to look into leaving NJ!
I have garbage included in my taxes. Many homes in this area are around that amount.
I have a cape cod, 4 bedrooms, not in a flood zone.
I lived in monmouth county, and taxes are high there from what I remember except maybe keansburg (lived there, wouldnt recommend it, kids or not).
Good luck in your search!
