What kind of restaurants are you looking for? Edison itself has some good apartments, and tons of restaurants, though many of them are chains.

What else are you looking for in a community?

A price range would help as well. Also, are you looking for more of a suburbia or urban feel?

Would you like to live on a waterfront? Expect to pay around $1600 bucks a month for 2 BR in Perth Amboy and $2k in South Amboy. In and around Edison but not on waterfront, it aint that cheap either. Expect the prices to be around $1200-$1700 for 2BR. If you commute to NYC, its a darn good spot to be in. However, I think the Metropark train station has outgrown itself. Too many commuters flocking it from other lame towns!

Westfield has a great downtown, shops, restaurants, and ambiance if this is what you are looking for. It's a few exits away from edison area...

There are a number of condo and apartment complexes off Rt 287 in Edison that would be suitable for you. Rents are not going to be too bad. I owned a condo in Edison for a couple years, the area was OK, nothing to get excited about IMO.

If you're interested in the elementary school, I wouldn't recommend Perth Amboy. Edison is fine (north Edison is better than south), as are Metuchen, Piscataway, Highland Park. Good luck.
