Okay, so I've done some internet research but I cannot get a clear answer: is NJ water soft or hard? I've always assumed that the water there was similar to New York's (especially the parts of NJ that are near NY), which is pretty soft. I've take showers in NJ and my hair comes out good, I've had great bagels and pizza in NJ (just as good as Long Island). Where in NJ is the water hard and where is it generally soft? Thanks!
There's lots of different water sources in NJ. I'm in West Orange (NJ American Short Hills system, I believe) and our water is hard but not extremely so (I've measured it from 6 to 10 grains).

I'm part of the short hills system as well. Just curious, do you have a water sofetener?
It varies by town and the town's water source (wells vs. surface water). I don't know if there's a central place to find state-wide water statistics. You could look it up on a town-by-town basis by finding the water supplier for a specific town on the town's web site, then go to the web site for the supplier, where they should have that information. In NNJ, NJ American Water and East Orange Water are two big water providers. I'ms sure there are others I'm not aware of.

I tested a gallon of Jersey City water. It seemed about average, not hard or soft from what I can tell. I will post photos of the test results in about 2 days here. Test photos will be right after NYC water test.
not something that can be generalized. Every one has different source. Where I am right now, here it's underground wells, next town over has a reservoir to collect rain water... Each town publishes and maintains a report on it's water quality. We used to get water quality results in the mail once a year. Now it's online.
I goggled "florham park nj water quality report" and got a bunch of responses.
