You'll need to do your own research for where you live.

However, I'm pretty sure that if I had an animal that carried rabies living in my home costs wouldn't be my first question, it would be "when can you come get this pest out of my house?"

Many years ago, different house, I had an animal trying to claw though a basement wall from the outside, I connected a speaker to an audio oscillator, a basic tone generator and set that to a high frequency audio tone above what humans normally hear. That was enough to get rid of the pest naturally.

I saw something similar on the internet but it was a strobe light. It irritated the animals and they moved out.

is it legal to kill racoons yourself or is that animal cruelty?

It's a question of how you'd do it in your attic. You don't want to shoot it, good chance you'll shoot through your house. Can't whack it with a shovel, you're going to hit the rafters. Can't gas it out, because you live below it. You certainly shouldn't set it on fire. Poison is probably the best bet, but I'm not sure what the local laws are. NJ allows raccoon hunting from October to May, but I'm not sure about in your attic.

The real concern isn't the one raccoon. The concern should be why it's there in the first place and if it's got babies.

I would think any exterminator could take care of this. I don't think you need a racoon specialist.

Most exterminators are experienced in getting rid of raccoons. If it were me, I'd call a local company that's been in the area a while, rather than call one of the big national companies.

Why would you kill a living creature if you can get it safely removed? They're not trying to hurt you. They're just looking for a place to live.

Geez, people, with your shooting and shovel-whacking. Think about karma.

I understand because we've encroached on their habitat, but they can cause a lot of damage. Years ago, I remember when a woman I knew told me that the raccoon damage was going to cost $15,000 to repair. That was in the '90s. I don't like raccoons that much.
