Hi, my family and I will be moving to NJ in April/May for my husbands job @ McGuire AF. We are looking to rent a 3/4 bedroom house near the beach possibly with a good public school system and nice neighborhood. We have three small children two of which are in elementary school. Any suggestions would be great.

What's your price range and how far are you willing to commute? McGuire is about an hour from the beach.

I would say look in the Manahawkin Barnegat area, I don't think the commute would be quite an hour, but summer rush hour fridays and holidays could be a *****. 70 and 72 are only 2 lanes.

No clue what the schools are like there.

Barnegat Schools have gotten better over the last few years. The town has moved up in "status" with the new developments and such, and I don't think that would be a bad place to look. But the traffic will be tough even in the off season. We travel out there quite frequently (not far from McGuire) and it takes us close to an hour every time.

I would like to stay at around 1500 month + until. I mapped 47 minutes from Sea bright? So we would be willing to do that. Thanks for the reply!!

47 minutes to Sea Bright? No Way! One thing you need to remember is that McGuire is not close to any of the major roads you will be needing to get to the beach .....the beaches you will be closest to would be Seaside, Point Pleasant...Barnegat Bay.....
Going up to Sea Bright means having to go down 537 for a while - then get on 195 then take Rt 18 to Rt. 36.....and in the Summer when you want to be at the beach the most, traffic will most definately not take only 47 mins. I'm sorry to give the bad news.

Same would go for the other areas but they will be a little easier to get to because the "back" roads are not as crowded (539 isn't anyway).

I used to live on base I used to live up in the area of Sea Bright
Remember, mapquest and such, don't take traffic into account. When I lived on McGuire I traveled to Long Branch and Bradley Beach several times a week - it took over an hour. 1 1/2 hrs even.

I think what you should ask yourself (IMO) is do you want to travel daily? Or just when you want to go to the beach? If you are planning on spending weekends at the beach, choose someplace that is closer to base- maybe something that will only take a 20 mins drive.

We lived in Eatontown, my husband would go to McGuire and I would go up to Hackensack, it was about an hour for each of us with NO traffic - and forget about the summer! One time in the summer it took me almost 3 hours to get home because of the traffic.

I live in Toms River right off the bay and across the bridge from Seaside Heights. I have heard that houses in my neighborhood are sometimes rented by McGuire families. I know they have in the past but personally haven't met any. It takes approx and hour to get to McGuire from here. Toms River has a good school system so if you really want to be close to the beach it could be a consideration. I would stay away from Seaside Heights. Rents might be reasonable but in my opinion not very family friendly during the winter.
