get off near Troy and take SR 7 thru Hoosic, NY and Bennington VT.

Once in VT stay on 7 north or take 100 north or continue on to rt 91 north.
That's good,I usually get off on the Mass Pike(90)into Mass and then straight up rt 7,Stockbridge ,Lee,Lenox,Pittsfield and Williams are all nice.

Indeed, it is quite relative.
The last time that I drove to Burlington, VT, my trip took exactly 7 hours from Central NJ.
Some may consider that to be a long drive, but I don't think that it is.

Where in Vermont are you after? From NJ I would only recommend the I-84/91 route if you are visiting the eastern part of the state, along the Connecticut River. Vermont does not have any highways running in a northeastern direction, so otherwise you would likely have to traverse nearly the entire state via local roads. Very scenic, but can be challenging in the winter depending on what type of car you have.

Otherwise, I would definitely recommend I-87. I visit upstate New York and New England several times a year and have always found I-87 through NY to have a lot less traffic than the I-84/91 route through Connecticut. Do watch out for state troopers though, there are a lot of them on the NY Thruway.

Hope you have fun....the Green Mountain state is a wonderful place

If you're going to the eastern part (like when I lived near Dartmouth College), take I-91. Probably the best route is Tappan Zee -> 684 -> 84 -> 91, though you could take CT route 15 instead.

If you're going to Burlington, Middlebury, or most of the western region, take I-87 up to Glens Falls, and then take US 4 to the VT border, and probably 22A north to Burlington.

However, when I visit my parents in Franklin County, it's so close to the Canadian border that the fastest route is WAY up I-87 and cross Lake Champlain just before you hit Quebec. Nice country up there, if fewer "obvious" tourist attractions.

Yup!
That is the route that I use when I go to Burlington. Seven hours, door-to-door from Central NJ, not too much traffic, and a lot of nice scenery.

W/ SW VT use 87 to 4. For the SW most corner use 87 to 7. Under 4hrs to Manchester. For scenic, yes go up through Williamstown, but if it's snowing, it's going to be a grind.
