Does anyone know if a ticket for not wearing a seat belt has to be disclosed when getting car insurance quotes? I am shopping around for insurance, and one of the companies I am getting a quote from wants to know if any drivers on the policy have had any "traffic violations" in the last 5 years. Confusing, because NJ distinguishes between moving violations that lead to points, and non-moving violations that do not lead to points. I don't want to lie (I'd imagine they will see it when they pull my driver history, anyway), but I don't want to say "yes" and get a higher quote, either.

This piece says the penalty for "No Seatbelt" says the insurance premium/quote should be only 1% more.

Laura Adams, a senior analyst at InsuranceQuotes.com said some minor violations don’t impact your insurance rate has much as others, because they don’t show risk as much to an insurance company.
“For instance, not wearing a seatbelt — the national average is about a 5 percent increase for not wearing a seatbelt, but in New Jersey it will only increase your auto insurance rate about 1 percent,” Adams said.

So it would amount to a 10 buck surcharge on a 1,000 policy. Hope this helps.

It doesn't matter what you disclose!!! If you tell them about the ticket and then it doesn't show up it will be removed. If you don't tell them and it shows up on your record, it will be added.

They can give you a quote based on a perfect driving record, but when they run your motor vehicle report (MVR) it will show everything on your record and that quoted price will go out the door. So you can either disclose the correct information or give your drivers license number so they can run your MVR upfront. Giving your D.L. # upfront will give you the most accurate quotes.

Not having your seatbelt on is NOT considered a moving violation by DMV, and will not be on the record that the insurance company pulls.

Oddly enough, the online quoting system doesn't ask for the DL #. But they were able to pull the info from my car registration, just from my name. I do realize that when they pull the driver history, any infractions will show up. But I don't want to get an artificially low quote and then find out later that the ticket inflated my rates.

It's not a moving violation, but IS STILL A VIOLATION & every state reports differently. Some states report all violations to the DMV. Check you states DMV website to see how seatbelt violations effect your record.

Or, if you live in NJ, check your state's MVC website in order to see how seatbelt violations affect your record.

Clearly, you are not from NJ, as your expectations are that there would be some easily-discovered information on the NJ MVC website. There are pages about "click-it or ticket", but no explanation of how seatbelt violations are reported on your driver history, or if they are reported at all. Well, if it is there, I did not find it after multiple search engine queries and reading plenty of pages on the website. Opacity is the name of the game here in NJ.
