Default Edison and New Brunswick Questions

I'll be probably be living in Edison or New Brunswick for the summer (internship) and I was wondering what your thoughts are about these two cities? Are there areas that should be avoided, and do you have any recommendations on where to stay? Any input would be appreciated!

NB is a small city with train line to NYC primarily dominated by Rutgers. If you rent around Rutgers you'll be fine but be aware that NB gets pretty dicey on the other side of town with crime, drugs, etc. Obviously there are many bars and restaurants. Edison is much more suburban with easy access to the main roads like RT 287 but it doesn't have a main street or many amenities. But there's enough around. Just depends on what you are looking for.

New Brunswick has a lot of areas that are pretty shady and crime-ridden. Your best bet would be to live near the Rutgers Campus. I'd stay within the area bordered by Somerset St in the South. Louis St to the west. The Somerset County Border to the north and the river to the east. There are also some apartments near the river in downtown NB that are pretty decent as well.

Edison is pretty much typical suburbia. North Edison is nicer and more affluent than the southern part but I wouldn't "avoid" either area.

Downtown New Brunswick and the areas near the College Avenue campus are safe and close to lots of restaurants, bars, the train station, etc. Edison is much more suburban where you wouldn't have very much within walking distance. There is a train station in Edison, and train stations in Metuchen and Metropark are close to parts of Edison. I'd agree with others that the farther away from those areas you get, the dicier the city becomes.

If you want a compromise check out Highland Park. It's located between New Brunswick and Edison. HP has a nice little Main Street (Raritan Avenue) with some shops and restaurants. You can walk or bike across the river to New Brunswick.

Rent north of the train station by the Rutgers College Avenue area if you want a safer spot. You can be at the train in 5-15 mins walk depending on where you live. NB has stuff to do - bars, Rutgers facilities, etc. Edison is a suburb and youll probably be bored.

Being that it is summer, if you want to chill out on the boulevard like this YouTube - Nucc Jersey, Livingston Ave/Remsen Ave area is where you want to be.

Thank you for the advice, sounds like either close to Rutgers or Edison in general are the safe spots, but that there isn't much going on in Edison. It doesn't matter so much where I stay since I'll be working around the 287/78 intersection for a relatively short period of time, but I just wanted to make sure I didn't end up on the wrong side of town since I'm not familiar with the area.
How is taking the train from Metuchen and Metropark if you want to get into the City? I'll definitely check out Highland Park as well, and if you have any other suggestions as far as towns or areas those are welcomed as well.

Live near Metropark or New Brunswick. Those are the best stations. Metuchen gets skipped sometimes on express trains

I would say North Edison very nice area but also its 35 mins away and that would depend on the traffice on rt 18.
I think metuchen , or highland park is closer. also that you will be there in the summer a lot of rentals will be empty because of school being out.
