Moving to New Jersey and I would like to be close to Manhattan! I've read forums about how Newark isn't safe but most of those were dated back in 2009-2014! Have the Newark/Orange areas improved? I'm a mom of 1 son so I'm looking for something safe but something convenient to Manhattan! I searched in the jersey city area and honestly I wasn't happy with some of my search results! Please any advice would help! Is the Newark and Orange areas/cities in North Jersey safe or should I completely stay away? Have they improved since 2014? Some apartment listings on Trulia seem to say most areas are safe!

Check out Weehawken, or Hoboken. Newark is still a wretched hive of scum and villainy. Orange is somewhat better, but also a cesspool. I'm a grown man who works out and took kickboxing for several years, and I refuse to go to Newark in the daytime. I would NEVER recommend anyone raise kids there, unless you want them to write the script to the next John Singleton movie.

Also, Staten Island is ten times better, at least parts of it.

LOL You're being really dramatic. I'm sorry you're so terrified of Newark that you won't even go in the daytime. There are parts of the city that are okay, even on the upswing, and have lots of professionals nearby during the day who go out to lunch in the area and stuff. There are some good, and/or trendy restaurants in certain areas of Newark like the Ironbound and the area around Rutgers and the Prudential buildings, just west of the Passaic River in what is I guess eastern University Heights-ish. I'm a petite young woman who goes to Newark during the day, every weekday. Raising kids there is definitely another story but it COULD be doable - and fine - depending on where the family chooses to live and if they have money to afford private school.

But there really are better areas near Manhattan to raise a family. The question really is budget.

Yes, the Ironbound is nice, but that's it. And being a single person and raising kids are two completely different things. For the price of private school+rent you might as well live in Staten Island or Long Island and just pay more for a place and use the public schools.

But I give Newark this: it isn't Camden.

Look, I agree that I wouldn't want to raise kids there, but let's be honest, you made the whole place seem like an unlivable completely avoidable hell and all I was saying was that it isn't. But would I raise kids there? Absolutely not, not even in the nicer areas, because like you said, it's not worth it when there are better options roughly the same cost with decent or better public schools.

Yup!
A major Drama Queen...for sure.
I am a 69 year old man who doesn't claim to be a kickboxer, or a cage fighter, or...whatever testosterone-fueled image that one might want to effect via the internet...but...somehow... I have been able to walk around University Heights, the downtown business district, and the Ironbound for ~40 years with no incidents/problems whatsoever. If we were to buy-into victorianpunk's scare tactics, I should have been dead at least 35 years ago.

It's been many years, but I have lived in Bloomfield and Nutley. They were nice back then, maybe members could give an update. I see that Rutherford gets good reviews for livability.

Kickboxing is for girls. You should stay out of my neighborhood.

To the OP how old is your son? If he is older then 10 he should be fine, as long as he joins the right gang. Be careful of what neighborhood you choose some border Montclair.
