The home has a lot of potential. And supposedly South Toms River Elementary is a great school.
We currently live in NYC and are living beyond are means. We're looking for something affordable but don't really know anything about Jersey.
Can anyone tell us anything about South Toms River, NJ??? Is it worth the move??

Check this web site out for data on Soutgh Toms River
(broken link)
To the person who speaks of Toms River South, that is a school district and not the same as the town of South Toms River. Need to get your geography straight before you comment.

I grew up in Toms River...South Toms River is a little beat up compared to Toms River but it's not that bad at all. Mostly middle class smaller homes (older ranch style homes) and there's a bit of traffic getting IN/OUT of S. Toms River but they are working on the roads to make that better. The upside is that the Parkway/Rt. 9 runs right through it and there are back roads to get in and out of town. It's also not a big touristy area so you don't deal with as many crazies in the summer..It wouldn't be my first pic of places to live but not bad overall. I'd maybe check out Beachwood and Bayville as alternatives if you are looking in that area. I don't know about the elementary schools but Toms River South High School is alright as are the rest of the Toms River School district.
Best of luck!

Left-wing environmentalist nut job? Yeah right. I suggest you look up my previous posts, as I am hardly liberal. I also hate the environment, so I would hardly consider myself an environmentalist. If anything I'd be in favor of cutting down the rainforests and starting up commercial whaling again.
Now on the other hand, would I like to live between a leukemia cluster and an aging nuclear power plant like the Chernobyl-on-the-Atlantic that you have down there in Toms River? The answer to that is definitely no.

For the original poster asking if South Toms River is a good place to live... I can not decide that for you but I can give you a small overview of the town:
Predominately African American/White and low to low/mid income households with multiple children. There is a small apartment complex just inside the town that has been known to numerous violence, drug raids, and theft. The town sends its students to Central Regional or Toms River South HS depending upon where your house is in the town. I would not consider the town a nice place to live regardless if you are single, married, and have kids or not. There is one good food place though- Luigi's... real good italian catering and deli. South Toms River is like a mini-lakewood (the black section, not the hacidic jew section) This post is not racist or prejudice so please don't post anything referring to my comments elliciting me as a racist which I am not. These are the mere facts of the town, you can look them up on city stats and demographics to confirm my statements. Thanks.

Toms River
Hi Jacsmora,
Don't listen to the BS about the cancer clusters that was cleaned up years ago. My family of 4 has lived here for almost 6 years now and it is very safe. I would recommend North Toms River to live or the eastern area of Toms River (previously named Dover Twp.).
Toms River has great schools and is a healthy environment to raise a family.
kind regards
Catherine

Toms River is a great place to grow up. I lived there until 1987. The drug problem I'm hearing about (from many different sources) is depressing. But change is inevitable. Not sure complete the cleanup was done. Ciba did pollute many wells and I remember kids I went to high school with died of cancer. I always thought this was normal!
South Toms River is far away from the clean up areas and I'm sure still is a great place. Make sure to visit the Novins Planetarium on the OCC campus!

if you can get past the cancer causing agents, good for you! the hard part is getting past the degenerates that occupy STR. Crime, drugs, rape and murder. go ahead, just lock your doors and ry not to raise kids in that town.

Ocean County
I think the better part of Ocean County is Barnegat. It's mostly residential
no big stores except 2 food store. Most of the big stores go to Lacey, Waretown & Manahawkin. Barnegat has stayed residential, We are host to a new HS, with New elementary school getting built as well. A great place to raise kids, and even retire. We're close to Bay and LBI, which is a little more
safer than Seaside. Also I know the traffic in Toms River and in Bricktown are very busy. And the population numbers consider Toms River a City. Yes, Toms River hosts our county seat and county government.
