we are currently in toms river. altho we're looking to move out of the state (we want to farm)

i think toms river is a nice town. Over the past few decades it has really grown, but the schools (when i went to them) were good. i can't really tell you how the schools are currently, as i don't have kids.

There are a few main arteries (Route 9 and Hooper Avenue) that can/do get backed up during certain times during the day.

there's a lot to do in the area - malls, restaurants etc, and not far from South Toms River. I don't know too much about South Toms River as I've never lived there but have known families that have lived there that were middle class, had nice houses (mostly ranch style) etc.

Good luck in your search!

Let me just clear up some misinformation...

The Power Plant is NOT in Toms River, it is in Lacey.
There are NOT murders and rapes going on in Toms River on a daily, or even monthly basis.
Last, how is Barnegat any better than Lacey or Manahawkin?
Lacey has the large stores???
Really?
In fact, Lacey has had ONE Shop Rite for years and no large retail until Home Depot just opened up in October.
Waretown has large stores?
Waretown is finally getting a Shop Rite!

I am not posting to call one place better than any other, just PLEASE get your information CORRECT before posting.

Thank you, finally someone else speaking out about all the misinformation about Toms River!...

Rapes, murders, chernobyl... it's actually so far from the truth it's comical!

And the BS about the Leukemia cluster. Which was never proven, nor has anyone ever been held responsible. Did anyone stop to think that the number of cases which were just slightly above the normal amount of expected cases could have been just a case of bad luck. The Asbury Park Press sure didn't. It wouldn't sell newspapers. I grew up 70 miles from Toms River and I knew kids that died from leukemia. While it is heartbreaking that any child has to suffer like this. It is a sad fact of life that some will.

If you believe this you are very misinformed. ciba was held responsible to some degree. they settled with the family's in 2002. It was not just a case of bad luck. That is being very naive.

here is a link for some info on this:

Toms River Cancer Cluster Settlement

Chemical companies and families affected by cancer reach agreement

Ciba-Geigy Corporation
From 1952-1990, the Ciba-Geigy Corporation (now Ciba Specialty Chemicals) operated a dye manufacturing plant in Toms River. Waste products from the plant were either stored in some 69,000 drums or were treated and pumped through a pipeline to the Atlantic Ocean. In 1980, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection required Ciba-Geigy to begin groundwater monitoring and drum removal at the plant site. In 1983, the Toms River site was placed on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Superfund list. The EPA discovered that the waste on the site was leaching into the groundwater below. In 1989 it ordered Ciba-Geigy to begin cleaning up the site and the groundwater.
Union Carbide Corporation
Owners of the Reich Farm had leased part of the property in 1971 to an independent waste hauler. In December of that year the owners discovered 4,500 waste drums bearing Union Carbide labels had been dumped on the land, and waste products had been poured into trenches. From 1972-1974 Union Carbide removed drums, trench waste, and contaminated soil. Unfortunately, the land lies above an aquifer which was the main source of drinking water for the entire township then. In 1974 the Dover Township Board of Health closed 148 private wells near the Reich Farm after finding contamination, and the homes were permanently connected to an alternate water supply. Residents in the area believe that the local water company, Toms River Water Company (now United Water Toms River), mishandled the water supply when it became evident that it was contaminated, and did not treat the water adequately to make it safe.

There were nine murders committed in Ocean County in 2007. These murders were committed in Berkerley, Ocean Gate, Manahawkin, Barnegat and Lakewood. For a huge county the number is not as bad as other counties in this State.
We can all have our opinions are what we think of towns in Ocean County, but please do not spew out misinformation.

The Asbury Park Press Newspaper listed all the murders and facts in Ocean County this year. Same as last year pretty much. Fishfan13 I throught this forum was for opinions.
The facts that I put out there are : Toms River is considered a CITY because of population. The traffic can be a nightmare at times. Young kids race up and down route 37 from Vaughn Ave out to Lakhurst. The Seaside traffic is a mad house in the summer.
Yes, are the Toms River Schools Good, Yes, they are the superintendent has run that district like a business for years. After all the Little League Baseball Players were world champions! The difference about Barnegat is that they are not allowing big Commercial Businesses in to line our main roads. The areas like Lacey Rd, Route 9, Route 72 to drive down could take forever. 10-15 min. These roads are lined with businesses. Its not misinformation just the facts with a little opinion.

Again, a few posts ago you said that most big stores go to Lacey, Waretown and Manahawkin...two of the three that you mentioned are wrong.
Name one big business in Waretown.
Now you are comparing Rte 72 with Lacey Road?!?!?!?!
Name one BIG business on Lacey Road.
10-15 minutes to drive down Lacey Road?
Maybe on a Schwinn!

BTW, the go-go bar that was finally closed down (Down The Hatch---although many of us called it something worse) isn't that in Barnegat?
Didn't A's try to open up a garden center in Barnegat...only to have absolutely no business and have to close down?
Seems to me (and this is just an opinion) that there is not enough money in Barnegat to support much anyway.

IMO, I would take the schools in just about any town in Ocean COunty over Barnegat's.

Did you find that BIG business in Waretown yet?

Shop Rite is moving into Waretown Sonic the traffic stops traffic on rt. 9 north. Route 9 is getting very busy through Lacey, There is chain businesses going up all over
Charlie Browns, Fridays. Auto sales ect. Its a good thing that bar closed down in Barnegat. Did you know there is only 3 liquor licenses issued in Barnegat and they are
not issuing any more. Not a lot of drunks out on the roads at 2-3am not like route 37 from Seaside. You seem to be down on Barnegat Schools, that's a shame because
Barnegat has a lot of pride in their schools, a very community based town. On a Friday nights when there is a football game the stands are full of people from town and the bleachers are packed. I spoke to a senior who attends Lacey HS and she said it is sad that people only come out on a few game nights or when the states are. I think you should ask a couple of young people in the area of what they think of Barnegat H S, You'll be surprised. The high School very good. This is our first senior class and the score will be out soon. Please note when Barnegat pulled out of Southern their achievement scores dropped. I'd give Barnegat I little chance. We are also building another Elementary school and will have a pool at our HS in a few years. I not sure what you mean by nothing to support Our tax dollars in Barnegat Support our children and community. We are a small community. We dont have multiple HS like North , South , East ,. Our kids in half the community are not bussed to Centeral Regional HS.towns away more than 10 miles away from their homes maybe four different HS. Your right Barnegat dosen't have a lot to support big business who dump and cover up commecial spills that have an adverse effect on our children decades later. Barnegat is a small growing community not at all classified as a city like Toms River.

This is what you said a few days ago...

Quote:
I think the better part of Ocean County is Barnegat. It's mostly residential
no big stores except 2 food store. Most of the big stores go to Lacey, Waretown & Manahawkin.
So Barnegat has two food stores.
Lacey has one Shop Rite.

Then you said...
Quote:
Shop Rite is moving into Waretown Sonic the traffic stops traffic on rt. 9 north.
A Shop Rite is finally being built in Waretown.
It is their FIRST ever supermarket!!!
But a few days ago you said that "Big stores" go to Waretown!
Where?
As for Sonic...
There is a Sonic and it is a cause for concern?
YOu heard the hype of the parking lot being packed for a few days...that was it. Traffic is not stopped on Rte 9.

You also said...
Quote:
Route 9 is getting very busy through Lacey, There is chain businesses going up all over
Charlie Browns, Fridays. Auto sales ect.
A Fridays?
Where is there a Fridays in Lacey?
Auto sales?
Do you mean an Auto Parts Store?
Yeah, that will drive up traffic on route 9!

Then there was...
Quote:
I spoke to a senior who attends Lacey HS and she said it is sad that people only come out on a few game nights or when the states are
UP until a few weeks ago I lived near Lacey HS.
Each and every game was packed with fans.
The reason why the stadium was overrun with fans the last few weeks was that there were more fans coming from out of town to see the States.

There was this little ditty...
Quote:
The areas like Lacey Rd, Route 9, Route 72 to drive down could take forever. 10-15 min. These roads are lined with businesses. Its not misinformation just the facts with a little opinion.
Maybe I should ask you "What do you have against Lacey and why do you exaggerate so much against it"?
It does not take 15 minutes to drive down Lacey Road!

When I started to look in Ocean County 12 years ago I looked in Barnegat...and I was not impressed.
The taxes are cheaper in Lacey.
The parks are second to none, in the County, in Lacey (Want to compare the number of parks in Lacey to the number in Barnegat???).
The school system is better in Lacey.

And Last, but not least...
The last FBI Violent crimes statistics published are from 2003.
Lacey Township Population 27,000---21 violent crimes
Barnegat Township Pop 16,000---42 violent crimes

Default Lacey Parks

I know Fischfan13, I use to work in Double Trouble Park, 20 years ago . Along with the game farm that is run by the dept of corrections. I use to work for Juvinile Services.
I have nothing against Lacey but if our opinions are differnt then let it be and move on . You have your opinion and I have mine. I lived here a long time and I too know the area. Let it go . Thanks,
