Hi,
My husband and I live in downtown Jersey City and commute to NYC for work. We are both Indian and young and like to socialize with people. We are planning to buy a house in the near future with
-Budget not exceeding 500K with possibly low taxes. Open to independent house, condos, townhouse
-commutable distance to NYC not more than an hour each way
-good neighborhood[not too suburb or too downtown ]
-good diverse mix of people
-good school district thinking ahead of future

We really love downtown jersey city and understand we cannot possibly afford a house here. But want to find a location that provides the best of what is stated above.

Metuchen, Edison, or Iselin. Those are big Indian communities with a good mix of people that should fit your budget.

Can you make it to times square on bus or train under an hour?

A modest home in Warren, Watchung, or Gilette, to utilize the Gilette train station.

I guess you missed the "not more than an hour each way" part of the commute. I commuted from Long Branch and then Little Silver. If you hit everything right, it's an hour and 45 minutes by trains. Usually it's two hours. It's an hour for the train trip JUST TO NEWARK PENN, and that's if you're on a rush-hour express train.

Check out Bergenfield. It is a 35-40 minute bus ride into NYC. It is a nice ethnically diverse town which is known for its Filipino population, but also has a significant Indian population. There are a few families of each on my street.

You can easily find a nice house here in the $300-400K range - Cape Cod or larger on a 50ft x 100ft or larger property. Taxes are high, but that's just about everywhere within a reasonable NYC commute. Expect to pay $9-12K.

Crime rate is low and schools have greatly improved.
