We are an Indian family of 3-me, wife, 3 yr old daughter. I work in NYC and wife works in Jersey City.
How is Metuchen or Edison, from perspective of travel times, good schools, property taxes?

I can comment on travel times. Metuchen and Edison are on the same NJ Transit line (Northeast Corridor line), but Metuchen is one station closer to NYC than Edison (by 5 minutes).

Travel can be ok to bad depending on time and condition of NJ Transit. It is rarely good since it is often jam packed even though 3 trains per hour still not enough to service.

Schools are above average and property taxes are in the high range depending on size and area.

If I were to live down there I wouldn't buy, too expensive right now. Renting isn't much better but atleast I don't have to tie down to spending on taking care of the house.

Typical commute to NYC is 60mins one way and in the morning expect 75min due to delays every morning.

Metuchen is more affluent. Edison is huge and has some very well off areas, mostly north of Metuchen, and some more working class areas on the south side. Edison has a larger Indian population if that matters. Schools are excellent in both towns.

That sums it up pretty well, but I think it is important to add that traffic congestion tends to be REALLY bad in both towns.

And, while the northern part of Edison is definitely more affluent than the southern end of that town, all of the recent development in "north Edison" seems to consist of bizarre-looking, grossly-overdone McMansions situated on lots that are FAR too small for their wretched excess.

Yes those homes are quite wasteful and ugly, but what new construction in NJ doesn't look like that?

As for traffic, the general area is loaded with business and is pretty much an epicenter in terms of a corporate mecca for "central" Jersey. Traffic will always be bad in that area. It is what it is.

My point--which I guess that I failed to explain completely--is that the lots in Edison tend to be extremely small, relative to the size of those new houses. In my neck of the woods, the minimum lot size is 2/3 of an acre, so there tends to be a much greater set-back from the street--in addition to the space between houses--versus the McMansions that are so close to the curb and to their neighbors in Edison, as a result of lots that are just too small for the size of the homes being built there nowadays.

And, I have to say that there are very few new homes in Somerset County that feature the... over-the-top... design details that seem to be so typical of the newer homes in Edison.

More property means more work. It's more to maintain. But yes they are quite disproportionate in general. Edison is not the only place where I've seen McMansions on such small pieces of property. Regardless I have never seen a house built over the last 25 years at this point that I would find appealing.

Ugly is just an opinion. Wasteful? Many of those homes are big but shared by multigenerational families.
