You could try Lodi, New Milford, Dumont. Lodi is the epitome of a blue collar town. Some of the towns near the city fit your description as well, but they get more expensive as you get closer to the George Washington Bridge.

How much are you looking to spend?

Sayreville is great. My husband and I are NYC transplants. We moved to Parlin (an area of Sayreville) 3 years ago, and we close on a house in 3 weeks. I work in Manhattan, the commute is very easy.

SD is beautiful country. Newark and Camden are warzones.
Bayonne is a working town. You could check out parts of Paterson as well.

I really wanted to buy a house nothing fancy a bedroom, bath, and living room..I have been looking online and there alot of houses for below 200 in penns grove, elizabeth, Long Branch, and Asbury Park....
For your budget, & being military, Browns Mills, Country Lakes is perfect for you. Taxes are also low.

There is a 3 bedroom 1 bath rancher with a fenced yard up the street from me that's been up for sheriffs sale since October, it's now listed at $144k Realtor.com link. The 2007 taxes were $2,592
