Default Living near Newark Penn?

Hi, I'm a young single man looking to more near the Newark Penn Station so I can have 24 hour PATH access to NYC. It's also a good spot because I can still commute to Livingston every day.

Does anyone have any pros/cons for me? I know many people have reservations about Newark but I'm not afraid of it and would try to live in a nicer area. Thanks!

The Ironbound section of Newark is definitely the better spot - thats the area near the trains (thus the name). Still not great, but much better. Big portuguese area, great food, went there just a week ago for my brother's birthday dinner.

There are stops between Newark and NYC. You don't have to limit your apt. search to just Newark. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey - PATH

The further west the better because I work in Livingston.. how bad would the reverse commute be from JC?

How are you going to commute to Livingston? By bus or car? If you take the bus from Newark to Livingston there are certain bus lines you absolutely MUST NOT RIDE. Other than that, if you choose to live in Newark, you may want to live in the ironbound section or in the new Condominiums downtown - or in the new housing that UMDNJ and NJIT recently built and own.

Don't bother with the inner city. I wouldn't recommend it.

Eleven80 Sensational Rental Residences | Newark, New Jersey Try that. Don't know if the sutdios/1 bedrooms are rented out, but this is the best location since you can take the 73 Bus route on Raymond Blvd straight into Livingston (they run some express trips during rush hours: go to njtransit.com for details). Depends WHERE in Livingston you work at though.

Someone also said the Ironbound which is okay but you might want to get something close to Penn Station because it is a big neighborhood.

JC and Elizabeth are worse commute times, and if you are bent on driving, you should just try West Orange or near Milburn/Short Hills stations and just forget the PATH.

So will I fit in at the Ironbound since I'm not Portuguese? Living near the PATH is pretty important to me because I want to be able to stay out in NYC/Hoboken/JC late and be able to bring a girl back the same night without driving

You can check out cities on the Midtown Direct that are a little further out; with great train service.

I am not familiar with sections of Newark; but I know there are a lot of "up and coming" areas. That said; the nicer areas may not be close to Penn Station.
