Um, yeah, some of us lived here when it was 201 and 609.
And ALL of NYC was 212. Then came beepers and fax.
There was an episode of Seinfeld back in the early 90s around the time area code 646 was introduced in NYC. They were making fun of that new area code.
I remember when area code 732 was introduced. I was living in New Brunswick and we changed from 908 to 732. I believe it was sometime in 1997.

I do remember once calling Information for a phone number in Princeton, and the operator asked me if the number I wanted was in 201 or 609. I said, "I don't know, what area code is Princeton in?" and she said it was split.
ETA. Looked it up. 609 was introduced in 1958, the year I was born. I know you're a coupla two-three years older than I am, Retriever, but still, you must have been a little kid.

Actually, I am ten years older than you are. Yes, I was fairly young when NJ was split into two area codes, but I definitely recall the days when all of NJ was "201 land".
And, here is an interesting little factoid for you. Franklin Township has portions that use the 732 area code, other areas that use 908, and still others that use 609. As a result, Town Hall maintains three phone numbers--one for each area code that is represented in the township. In the era of cellphones, this seems unnecessary, but I guess we can't assume that everyone has a cellphone.

I remember the phone number. GIlbert4-9065. We got it changed when I was around 8 because some weird young guy was stalking my mother, who was pregnant with her sixth child at the time.

I still remember our phone number--in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn--from my early childhood. In case of becoming lost, I had to memorize our address and our phone number--which was TErrace-6-0618. That was about 65 years ago, but the importance of remembering it was drummed into me.
