Hello! My company is relocating me back to NJ. I moved away about 2.5 years ago and lived in Millburn which was not the place for me but loved the walkability to train, restaurants.

Where are you coming from? LA
Why are you moving? Relocation.
Where will you be working ? If NYC, what part of NYC? Clark or Berkeley Heights (new team and space not yet found so somewhere between these two). I'm moving from LA so use to commute times but would like less than 45 minutes.

Will you buy or rent? 1-2 years rent but buy long term. I want to move to a town I love but some of my choices are not in my price range to buy so find a town I like with affordable cities nearby so I can still be close.
What is your budget ? Rent $1600-$1800 (lower the better to save for a house) and house budget ~325k
What kind of place are you looking for? Renovated within 5 years, a real kitchen, 1-2 bedrooms (if one the office or large living room). Garage and laundry in the unit is highly preferred.

Will anyone (spouse, children, pets) be moving with you ? Cat
Do you need/want good public schools? Not important as I don't nor plan to have kids but decent schools usually are an indication to property values and safety. I realize not always but I've generally noticed this to be true.

Briefly describe the kind of neighborhood you'd like to live in
(examples: families with young children, young, mature, artsy, diverse, safe, close-knit, block parties, etc)
I would like a walkable area to get to restaurants and things to do. Diverse is generally important. Mature as far as I'm 43 and don't need a heavy nightlife as far as partying. Safety is a concern.

List three things that are important to you in order of importance.(examples: nightlife, outdoor activities, rural/urban, safety, downtown area, charming, new construction, proximity to XYZ, family oriented, easy parking, short commute, etc)

Walkability
Safety
Affordability

I like Summit and Morristown but after reading about Montclair and thinking of adding to list. I know I can find somewhere to rent in all these places but what about long term to buy but to stay close?!?!

Thank you in advance for any feedback.

Hah - I was going to say Summit. I haven't spent any time in Montclair, but a decade ago my best friend lived right in the center of Summit and it was lovely. "Town" living is not at all my thing, but if I had to do it, Summit would be the place for me. That said, I know nothing about Montclair or Morristown. I just found Summit to be convenient and pleasant.

I agree with JrzDefector, before I even finished reading your post I thought "Summit!", then Montclair (but it's further), then Morristown (3rd due to age interests). Add Westfield in there too. I don't think you'll have a problem finding something to rent in your price range, though it may be smaller and not as updated as you like. You will have difficulty with the home purchase price range. $325k does not go far.

Montclair would be a tougher commute to either part of Union County than the other two.

If you like Summit and Morristown you'd probably like Cranford too. Very walkable, has a train to NYC. It is prone to flooding but you can certainly rent for a year or two to see if you like it.

The above poster is right - 325k will not get you far in many parts of Union County, especially in areas that have great downtowns and school systems.
