Ferries land in lower Manh., but they're expensive, plus they don't run in violent weather or -- obviously -- when the river freezes.

If you come into Gr. Cent., the subway won't add more than 20 mins. to your commute. Some Ct. stations are well less than an hour away, W'chester even less.

Check out the Midtown Direct line in NJ. There are a lot of great towns, Maplewood/South Orange, Summit, Short Hills and Millburn. And they are close to the Newark airport.

Another great town, with a direct train line is Montclair NJ.

allitot is on a distinguished road
My husband just took a job down on Wall Street and we live in New Canaan...we are going to look at Ridgewood and Summit. CT is still too expensive..you can get something for under 1.5, but your money will go further in NJ. Forget Gwich. Min 1.8. I prefer Summit to Ridgewood. Glen Rock is nice and is right next to Rwood with better schools. We have my husband's family in upstate Ny, but I really don't care...
