That was funny...50 years ago when the first person said it.

But as a payback for dredging up that sad old joke, I'm going to tell you why!

A driveway was originally the road in front of a house where the coachman pulled up the horse and carriage, dropped off the family, and continued on to the stables and carriage house in the back. Nobody parked on the driveway.

A parkway was a road that went through a park. Highway planners decided that calling roads parkways and planting a bunch of trees along the way to evoke a parklike feel would jazz up a plain old boring road and maybe hide some ugly parts.
