I know the OP said their husband is willing to add 30 minutes to their commute, but do a lot of people commute from Clinton to Midtown? That sounds like it would get old quickly.

Clinton to West Orange is more like 45 minutes outside of rush hour. I imagine it's longer during rush hour. Same would apply to a NYC commute.

The Clinto AREA is nice in the county, not the town proper. Clinton Township is a better voice for land and larger home. There is Transbridge Bus lines. Fine as long as no accidents, snow etc on Route 78

Train from High Bridge at ~ 6am gets you into midtownManhattan by 8 am.Switch train at Newark and then take MTA subway uptown. Looks longer time than bus but consistent

Schools are superior thus the draw to the are.

Some have municipal water some on wells

Taxes are not low

Pretty safe area

PS get to Newark before the 5:35pm leaves and get to Annandale or Highbridge before 7pm

Fairly consistent commute in or out to Manhattan

Can you describe Clinton Township's voice?
Is it Bass, or Baritone, or Soprano, or...

To voluntarily give your kids a 30 minute commute and husband a 80 minute commute does not seem like an appealing option to me.

I have a 90 minute midtown commute 3x/week and even that is miserable.

Also an extra 30 minutes might not get you more than 10-15miles distance unless your home is near the highway & bus stop.

Here are some alternatives:
If your kids are in high school, stay put until they are in college, then move rural.
If your kids are younger than high school, don't worry about keeping them at their school. That opens up alot more options. Along 78, west or RT 27 becomes rural.
Buy a condo near NYC for husband weekday, live wherever you want.

Somerset Hills towns (Bernardsville, Basking Ridge, Far Hills, Peapack, Mendham, Bedminster) all have rural areas and 30 minutes to West Orange. Seems like an obvious option that has not been mentioned.
